when the car is in idle there is a distinct high pitch whinning noise coming from the front of the engine.. sound is louder and longer right after you step then let go of the gas.. its not the belt tensioner.. anybody here have a clue.. at first i thought it was the tranny or the throttle body..

Have your pulleys checked, I had this happen when I went through some deep water.
never drove my runner in deep water but it's worth a shot... also the sound is not there when you step on the gas.. it's when you release it.. i would only go to 1000 rpm then let go and you would hear that whinning noise.. will it harm the engine if i take off the serpentine belt and run the engine so i can check if it is the tensioner?

not a squeal... a/c on or off doesn't change it (tried that)... even when moving the steering wheel (tried that too).. i'm pretty much on neutral, you can hear it on idle (barely)... when you step on the gas, it gets louder when you release... pretty much stumped here.. also on 1st start-up it's not that loud... but after you run the engine for awhile, you can definitely hear it.. it's more of a "turbo whinning" down sound.. and no i don't have turbo on my 4runner..

this is going to sound crazy..but do you have your "aux" going on your radio (are you using the ipod jack)? I have satellite radio hooked up through mine and if I dont turn the treble down, I get a turbo whining sound all the time too, especially when accelerating, coming through the speakers. I realize that this probably isnt it, but I get the same sound you are describing through my radio, when I am using the ipod connector, especially when accelerating. Worth a shot

I have a 2004 sport 6 that had/has this problem. The 1st time it was one of the pulleys - not idler.. Changed under warranty. Happened then again - same part less than a year later again part under warranty (from 1st replacement) and replaced. Started up again (2 years later) this time it was different pitch but acted the same way. I was told it was the tensioner by the alternator - still to be remedied. Strange though it really never sounds loud outside but inside it seems real loud and puts me on edge.

Sounds like the ground loop and it's getting feedback from the cigarette lighter port in your case. Toyota has a TSB issued for this.

Wow, I had no idea it was a recall, any idea on how I would go about getting this fixed? I would love to fix this issue, especially if it didnt cost me anything
ok.. so i bring it in to toyota to have it checked... first dealer i went to.. didn't have all 4 pulleys/tensioner but the mechanic said he was having difficulty located the source of the whine but did confirm it was the pulleys and wanted to change all 4 (he said he took off the belt and the sound went away)... so i go to a different dealer and i tell them what the problem was.. they had all 4 parts but only replaced 2... when i told them the sound is still there after a 5 hr wait, their mechanic said it wasn't the pulleys.. and said that the sound is normal.. i told them i had an 05 runner before and it never made that sound.. it was a long day i didn't want to argue with them...i guess i have to go back to the first dealer now and have them replace the other 2...
thank god for warranty.. paid $50 deductable.. now i have to pay another $50get the other 2 pulleys replaced..

no, the sound is definitely coming from the front of engine and not the speakers.. you just need proper grounding on your sat radio to get rid of that sound..

Um...if the sound is normal why did the 2nd dealership replace the pulleys at all?
I'd be back in there wanting them to replace the other two. Do you have a receipt or anything in writing from the 1st saying what the problem was?
well at first they said the sound is abnormal.. after they replaced only 2 pulleys (their mechanic said only 2 needs replacement), they said the sound was normal and that they compared it with another 4runner (yeah right).. i told them to replace all 4... bottom line is they are afraid that after they replace the other 2 and the sound does not go away, they will be charged for the parts used, and won't be reimbursed since they never solved the problem.. i told them to take off the belt and start it but they insisted that the sound is normal... so i'm taking it to the first dealer who said they took off the belt and sound went away..
Funny, you are kind of describing a similar noise I have with my 08 v6. Did you say the whine seems to get louder as the engine warms up?
During acceleration there is no whine but during deceleration, e.g. when you take your foot off the gas and the rpm’s start to drop does the whine become noticeable?
Does it seem to be most noticeable right around 1500rpm?
Can you hear the whine in the background while driving when the rpm’s are near 1500rmp or so?

update: so i took it to the first dealer i originally went to and told them the second dealer only replaced 2 pulleys after their own tech said all 4 needed to be replaced.. after another 5 hours waiting they said they couldn't determine where that whine is coming from and that concluded that everything is all good.. problem with that is i removed the belt the night before and started the runner and behold, no whine.. replaced it back and whine was back.. i told them this and their answer was sound was normal, after the fact that when they first heard it, they said it was an unusual sound... i also compared this with my in-laws 4runner and they don't have that whinning sound.. last option for me here is to replace the belt.. maybe that's the root cause.. although i highly doubt it..
