Engineers?

This isn't really about 4runners but I've noticed that this forum seems to have a really high concentration of engineers. I'm a senior in high school and am planning on pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at one of the 6 colleges I've applied to and am wondering if anyone has any advice for me going into college.

So post up of you are an engineer or have anything to tell me!

I should have changed from chemical to software engineering and then headed out to Silicon Valley when I graduated in '93.
 
What schools did you apply to? What attracts you to engineering?

I'm a manufacturing engineer in the medical device industry. I graduated from Iowa with a B.S.E in biomedical engineering in 2013
 
Computer engineer here. Advice: don't change to computer engineering unless you're a 1%er and plan on working in Silicon Valley. There are no jobs. I chose computer over software because I like hardware but I wound up doing Android development because of the lack of CE jobs. That's my two cents.
 
Don't go to college to party, don't go in debt, pick a degree that is employable (like ME), and finish in 4 years. Maybe I sound like your parents.

Make sure you are good at and like Math. Otherwise go to a community college for a couple of years to find out what you really want to do. And you dont have to work in Silicon Valley. It's actually better not to. I earn close to Silicon Valley salary with 1/10th the mortgage payment. Get to spend money on overpriced SUV's that way. Good luck and good career choice if you end up going the engineering route.

But I have a great job because I pursued education and licensing after getting through the mandatory university bullsh*t. If you're a hard worker, show up on time consistently and DO YOUR JOB, your degree doesnt really matter. Unless you're going to really be an engineer, or a doctor. or attorney?

Honestly most college classes are a complete waste of time and finishing with a good GPA only matters if you feel the need to attend graduate school.

Getting an engineering degree will serve you much better than any liberal arts garbage. Even most business degrees are a complete waste of time and tuition monies. I was actually really interested in mechanical engineering(originally picked that as my major) and dreamed about working with Lockheed Martin or Boeing. But as it turns out, I really suck at math, so now I'm a well employed ski bum. and spend most of my days shredding around with a surprising number of engineers that would just rather ski, which I always thought was really interesting...

First, congratulations on preparing to graduate and take the next step. I am a Mechanical Engineer myself with a little over 6 years out of school working for the same Fortune100 Company in 3 different roles. My views have changed dramatically in these past 6 years and I am sure they will continue to evolve as I gain more experience. I will assume that you have a baseline of the class type that is required for ME and won’t provide guidance there, only that I assume you like math?

The beauty of Mechanical engineers is that the field is extremely broad- you can be a design engineer, test and validation engineer, Manufacturing engineer and those are just a bit of what I consider "core options" once you are in industry , even more doors open. Knowing what you think you want to do out of school will help guide the school/class choices. Do you want to do actual product design and engineering calculations or do you want to use the engineering mindset to solve practical, but maybe not “cutting edge” problems? (No one job will be strictly one thing or the other)

Moving on to advice,

*I assume it is too late for this but in hindsight I wish I had taken more AP exams, both to save money and spread out course load. Although, taking Calc 1&2 in college after taking them in high school make those 2 easy A’s to get a solid start to the GPA. Speaking of, GPA is not an end all be all, I did not have a 4.0 but you do need to keep it above X level for most companies I would say 3.0-3.2 was the min. they were looking for…..obviously more is better but don’t think for a second that it’s the only thing that matters. Having been on both sides of the interview table now I will say we are much more likely to hire a 3.4-3.7GPA with some solid experience with activities, teams etc. then someone with a 4.0 and only a senior design project on the resume.

*Not sure if it’s still popular but when I went to school there was an amazing amount of folks that used websites like RateMyProfessor etc to try and get the easiest schedule possible….DO NOT DO THIS, use it as a tool to help make worthwhile decisions. There are crappy professors out there meaning not only are they bad at teaching but they are hard testers/expect a lot….avoid those. But if you just try to get the easiest schedule you are only cheating yourself out of a solid education that you are paying for.

*If you are more hands on consider schools with good outside core class activities like Baja or Formula Racing these are great because they can be lots of fun, allow you to work in a team environment and are awesome things to talk about/have on the resume. Remember as you progress in life the field gets “tougher and tougher”

*As I mentioned earlier if you have an idea of what type of job or industry you want to be in tailor your elective classes to that. Someone wanting to go into widget manufacturing will likely get little value out of a high level Dynamics class but on the other hand human factors (safety) class can give you a leg up on the current standards and how they apply. Opposite would be true if you want to design missiles and rockets for a defense contractor.

*Co-op/internship I believe these are almost required nowadays but plan on aggressively pursuing this during your college career and realize that it gives you a HUGE leg up not only for the company’s you work for but also when applying to other companies. Even though it’s fairly rare for a freshman to get one I went to the career fair to get experience talking to recruiters and selling myself etc.

*Be prepared to buckle down during the more advanced classes that may or may not have value in your career…example I found Linear algebra and Diffy Q very tough and hated them……not just because they were hard but at that point I had interned at the company I was 99% sure I would work for (and yes I did end up there) and have found ZERO practical use for that knowledge in my field and guarantee that if I took any of those exams again would bomb them. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth while it just can get a bit frustrating if you don’t see the value in those subjects and harder to focus.

*If you can, work to help put yourself through school my parents paid ~65% of school and the rest was on me. You will appreciate it more AND if possible graduating without student loans is a huge help.

*Finally, not school work related but network as much as you can. Even now, if you have a company in your area that you think has ME’s….send them a e-mail, phone call or if its small enough swing buy and explain you are thinking of going to school for it and are curious to what type of roles they have. Its encouraging that you reached out here, continue that behavior and you will be just fine.

*O, and have fun!

Lots of good advice here. I'm a marine engineer and graduated from Maine Maritime Academy. I have a marine engineering technology degree as well as a USCG Assistant Engineer unlimited horsepower license. My field is a bit of a mechanical specialty and involves spending lots of time away from home for weeks to months at a time. If I could do it again, I would have gone the normal mechanical engineering route. At the end of the day it pays well and keeps me entertained. Let me know if you have ever thought about working on ships. Currently, I'm employed on a 12000 hp crude oil tanker.

All I can say is about one-third of my MBA class were engineers.
 
I'm an engineer. Been at it for 28 years. I design high pressure hydraulic systems.

Let me give you a piece of profound information. You must promise never to forget it, especially in your third year when you think you know everything.

Ready? "Your engineering degree, regardless of discipline, will just tell your prospective employers that you have the ability to learn and solve problems logically."

That's it. In four years, everything you learn is only preparation for the next phase of learning.

My son will graduate with his BSME next week with a 3.8 GPA. He starts on his MBA in May.

I am a civil Engineer and work in the construction services field. I can say that it is fine and dandy to go through college and memorize all of these fancy formulas and concepts, however, your degree will teach you 3 key things.
1. How to look stuff up! you will have many tests that are open book or open note, which is great till you think about the obscure topics that they could ask, or even combine three concepts that are individually covered in the book, but the combination was covered in class lecture. Know how to look things up in manuals and books, not just the internet. you could spend all day looking page by page through a book to fail the exam in the end...
2. STANDARDS! everyone has a different standard, CITE IT!!! if you don't cite or refernece what standard you are using then it is garbage... whether it is a specific code or a detail, it can make all the difference in how it is interpreted or even built.
3. you are never alone! there are generations of engineers that have done something similar or might have some sliver of knowledge that will help you get the answer to what you are working on. USE THEM! make relationships with other engineers and network (not linked in... )you might be the one to call them, they may call you some day.

Remember that Engineering, no matter the field, is about process and logic. your whole career is teaching you the steps to solving a multivariable equation is a process... not an answer...

and word to the wise, try to do it without your calculator. the faster you are with hand math on paper, the better you will be able to trust your work that you show on the exams. plus if you can look up the calculator that is allowed on the certification exam at the end of your education, buy it now and learn to be limited by the power. think of it as buying a honda and being really good at driving it anywhere vs buying a lamborghini and not being able to get it out of park...
 
Seattle is filled with software engineers making a minimum of $100K/year+ starting before bonuses. They also have and drive the coolest toys around here. My cousin who graduated from UW with a software programming degree just got hired with Google, he's eating good.
 
I'll throw in my $0.02...

I am currently a Civil Engineering undergraduate at Utah State University. My parents are both engineers (CE and ME) and met working on Space Shuttle, and their parents were engineers, etc. etc. My dad owns two aerospace engineering companies. I was raised my whole life with the idea of being an engineer, and due to my dad's role as always being Chief Engineer I grew up with maybe a different idea of engineering than most (at least in the relevant fields of civil, structural, aerospace, etc that I grew up around).

I would say make sure you like engineering before going into it. I think a lot of people do engineering because someone told them they were good at math and/or science and should do it, but didn't really understand what engineering was until junior year and then just kept with it and ended up being shitty engineers. I've worked with a lot of engineers who sucked at engineering and had a BS, or an MBA, whatever and just didn't understand engineering and weren't naturally good at it. You can be taught all the math in the world, but it doesn't mean you can look at a structure or an engine or whatever and have an inherent feeling and understanding of what's going on. So I would maybe go to some engineering firms and talk to them and have them show and explain to you what they do (assuming you don't have easy access to engineers) and see if it sounds like something you'd like to do.

When you first start college, well actually like 70% of it, is COMPLETELY useless classes. Real engineering classes are pretty easy and only really start to pile on junior year. Classes like Calculus and Differential Equations are totally stupid and pointless and don't convey basic engineering in anyway. Not to say they can't be useful (depending on your field, I've still never used anything outside of a derivative or integral in any class, and that was just to explain where an algebra equation came from) but they aren't engineering imo, and schools load you up with all these useless ****ing classes and don't show you what engineering actually is and how it can be fun until late in your education. So if you like engineering, or you think you do, don't be put down by the bullshit classes they give you and all the stupid generals.

As for actual advice when it comes to school, I don't know what I can really give... I personally absolutely hate school and think it is the biggest waste of time ever, but keep going through it simply because I want that title of "engineer". Don't go with the mindset that college is required. I think too many people nowadays go to college just because people tell them to, and act like they can't be successful otherwise which is total bullshit.

Also don't pay much attention to grades. Grades are completely stupid and pointless so don't fret about them, imo anything over a C grade is just wasted effort haha. But seriously, you should be making contacts and acquaintances before/during/after school to get a job, and grades don't affect your life at all after you graduate. Additionally, all the professors at my school at least, push to get an MBA or Ph.D for students which I think is a pretty big waste of time. Job experience is much more valuable than some extra schooling imo (kinda goes back to practical knowledge of engineering than the useless things they teach you in school).

Everyone says take school super seriously and stuff, I would have to disagree. As a student you'll want to kill yourself every week of your life, so try to chill out and have some fun. There's nothing wrong with partying if you get that C in the end. Go offroading, work on your truck, bang some chicks, party with your friends, try to have fun since college is a unique and brief experience in your life and imo is probably one of the hardest periods of your life so try to relax a bit.



TL;DR -- If you're like me, school is horrible. If you think you actually should go to school, go for it, don't hate your life, grades don't matter. Do what you like and have a passion for, not what your parents or teachers say you should do. Don't lose your creativity. Just because you have bad grades doesn't mean you won't be incredibly successful. Remember, at the end of the day, or in 10 years, it's just a piece of paper.

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me. Just my $0.02 as a Civil Engineering student who is about to go into another set of finals.
 
Dear prospective engineer,

I'm graduating in May with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering technology (MET). The "technology" or sometimes called "applied engineering" adage means its more "hands on" learning than the normal ME degree. We have some local industry engineers teach us Solidworks modeling and similar classes and they have said they prefer to hire MET grads over ME because they don't have to teach them some of the more basic design practices. Example: a teacher told us from his industry hiring experience, a ME grad will defend his design with calculations and computer models where my teacher could simply look at the design and say it wouldn't work. Or they designed it in a way it couldn't physically be assembled or even built. They haven't had this experience hiring MET grads. I've been told the difference between ME and MET is that MET grads know how to change a flat tire. I'm sure that's not accurate but I found it funny. Hopefully I don't get flamed as most the engineers here are probably MET.

MET's don't usually take math above Calc II. While I can say I probably despise calculus, algebra and trig are way more important and useful for me anyway. Classes like dynamics, statics, machine design 1&2 and physics 1&2, plus others, you rely heavily on algebra and trig. As an aspiring engineer, you don't have to necessarily be great at it yet, you should at least like doing it and be open to learning more about it. If you hate math and don't appreciate its usefulness, whether you are good at it or not, you won't like engineering and will drop out after the first semester. Probably will transfer to a liberal arts school, graduate with loads of debt, and land a job as a fry cook that sings in an a cappella group on the weekends. If this sounds like something you might enjoy doing, engineering isn't for you. If you find a reasonable program like mine and start paying it off while taking classes, you can easily graduate with only $5-$10k in debt with a starting salary of $30k-$50k.

Whether you do the ME, MET, or other engineering degree, just know that a good engineer has experience getting their hands dirty once in a while. You can't expect to learn much or be a good engineer just by doing the math and coming up with designs on a computer and sending it to the machinists or fabricators to build. The shop guys will have a trash can dedicated to the drawings with your signature on it when they can't reasonably build any of your designs. You'll need good communication skills to work with and take input from the shop guys. Having actual machining/welding/soldering/fabricating/construction experience goes a long way on your resume and on your effectiveness as an knowledgeable engineer. You'll be a machinist's best friend. Get in a school that has an active baja or formula club and help out and learn as much as you can.

My advice, get a job at a local company with engineers as soon as possible in your college career. Doesn't even have to be in the engineering department as long as you get your foot in the door and start making money to pay off college. My freshman year I got a job in the distribution department of a machine manufacturing company and learned a lot about the company. Just over a year later I moved to their service center where they service and refurbish their customer's machines and learned a ton about the mechanics and hydraulics of their machines. I've since moved to the engineering building as an intern and have designed, built, and tested numerous prototype and production projects I actually find very interesting and have since learned a lot about the company's industry (geotechnical). I get to create a design on the computer and once it is finalized, I gather and cut the materials I need, and either head to the weld shop and get started welding/cutting/grinding or over to the machine shop and start machining on the mill or lathe; sometimes a CNC if I'm lucky. I've been working 30+ hours per week either in engineering or running CNC production parts at night in the machine shop between all my classes. Whether I'm at my desk, the weld shop, or the machine shop, if I have a question or need help, I know everybody who works there and believe me when I tell you they are all complete experts in their fields. You can learn more from talking to them and trying it yourself than you can from any book. That is an understatement.

There is no way you can learn everything you need in your career by the time you graduate. They teach you the tip of the iceberg of engineering, how to look up and sort through information and use your resources, and send you on your way with the ability to learn more on the job. It is your responsibility to learn more in your career because the industry is always changing and new manufacturing processes and machines are being invented along with new rules or codes.

Hope this helps someone with their decision when they graduate. The past 4 years I've learned more than the rest of my schooling combined. Engineering seems to be a "mindset", where you disassemble everything (not literally like legos, but sometimes), break it down and analyze all the details, and start from scratch with what you know and how you can make it better. I even see the world a bit differently now. Didn't mean to get all philosophical there, sorry! :p Thanks for reading my unusually long post, back to 4Runner stuff for me!

I'm a ME, I chose that field because it is in the middle of engineering and you can broaden out any direction.

I always wanted to be a biologist but my dad was an engineer and forbid me from studying it, "I guarantee you'll never get a job, you'll be a failure". Total BS, I've worked lots in biology, he screwed me up in the head but I did engineering anyways and resented it. I'm a good engineer tho. It's a good base to build from, some people get an MBA or I think another great avenue would be to combine it with law, you could really go far with patent or corporate applications there.

People think that you'll get an awesome job and make tons of money as soon as you graduate, not very likely. With everything you have to find / develop your niche and specialty.

Manufacturing has been shipped over to China but there are other opportunities.

IMO there are too many engineer in the world, the world needs more doctors.

But I really appreciate the understanding of how the world works that studying both engineering and biology has given me. I see the world differently and pick up on things most people gloss right over or just don't understand. Sometimes I have to remind myself that most people don't really understand the fundamentals of how the world and society tick.

Anywho, I'd like to encourage you as you go into this:

When lives depend on your work later on:
0. Your integrity as an engineer is more inportant than the paycheck.
1. Others' feedback is useful, consider all of it.
2. Make decisions and do not second guess yourself, just validate your work.
3. Your integrity is more important than a manager's favor.
4. Teamwork is essential. Lead, but also follow.
5. Play to your strengths.
6. Never be the smartest person in the room.
7. Never try to sound smart in a room that meets note 6.
8. Leave work at work. Only work outside of work when necessary to meet notes 0,2, and 4.
9. Be humble.
10. The answer 'it depends' is justifiable in most discussions.
11. Never BS your work.
 
There's a lot of advice here about engineering in general. Given that you are 18 and headed into college I'll just add that college when you get there is probably going to be different than you expected.

Much of the first 18 months will be filter classes. Study your heart out and utilize all the resources you can. Study groups, teachers office hours, help centers etc. Maybe you'll never need them but most schools have a lot of resources that students never even use.
