Ethanol and the 3G4R's

I know this topic has been discussed in other threads on this forum. But, I did not see one in the 3rd Gen section.

I've been reading up on the use of ethanol in engines. Some reports say does the environment good and doesn't harm engines. Other say it's a scam, doesn't put out less emissions, and ruins engines. Mainly fuels lines and fuel pumps.

My question is has anyone noticed anything different with you engine when using ethanol laced gasoline? I live in Houston. So, my gasoline has 10% ethanol in it and seems to run fine. No problems. But, maybe you've had problem, or know someone that has.

C'mon man, anything to do with the oil companies is a scam!

Ethanol sucks and you get lower MPG's with it. Not sure on how it affects the longevity of fuel system parts, but its probably not good.

Just wait until they bump it up to 15% then we are all in for a big treat...

i will never buy a flex fuel vehicle(used)... ethanol will corrode your engine.

i use that stuff b4 great for passing smog really bad to drive daily

Ethanol does drop the mileage a little, probably 1 or 2 mpg on a 4Runner (since it doesn't have as much energy per gallon as gas), but it's not likely to hurt any components. Older cars had fuel systems that weren't compatible, but anything built since the early 90s is fine with the small amounts in gas.

I burn E85 (85% ethanol) in my 65 Mustang (it's the 'poor man's racing gas' - 105 octane) and researched all the issues. You can't burn E85 without substantial fuel system upgrades (larger injectors, fuel pumps) and there's no advantage to it on a 4Runner.
