evap canister air drain

my fellow 4runner brothers and sisters. whilst changing my battery today i appear to have broken off the air drain hose from the evap canister.

ive searched the fsm and while i couldnt find anything related in the 2000 t4r, i did find some info on the taco fsm which i assume should be similar if not the same.

question i have is where does it go and what will be the result of running disconnected. at idle i did not notice anything different or cel's or anything. all seemed normal.

As far as i could figure out, when the pressure (air?) builds too high in the canister, a valve opens and releases (air?) but i dont know to where, or why.

i found the attached drawings in the taco fsm but i cannot find where the line goes to in any drawings. as far as on the rig, it was starting to get dark out and i could not trace the line from top side or underneath. it disappears somewhere heading towards the tranny and by the time i am underneath, i cant really identify where it comes down.

im unemployed right now so $200+/- on a new canister is not really an option for me at the moment. id be willing to try a repair but im not very confident in reattaching such a small and weak piece of plastic with any success.

So anybody familiar with this part of the system? any advice is greatly appreciated. attached is a pic of the broken air drain connection and a couple pdf's from the taco fsm.

Chris

its your giant hands man... lol naw just kidding, we can take a look see at it on the 15th if not sooner, and nice choice in a battery! id say run it as is, ill ask my father inlaw on sunday(hes my mechanic -the head tech at the toyota dealer) what his thoughts are and yeah im sure he will say just drive it till the doors fall off lol(at least i hope thats what he will say, other wise ill feel bad for saying "no big deal").

Thank you kind sir. I appreciate the help. Ive got a bunch of stuff printed out like fsm diagnostics on the evap system. im trying to make sense of that but figured id throw it out to the collective in the meanwhile.

Funny enough this all started with trying to install a cb in prep for the meetup. The plan ended up derailed pretty quick. found my battery dead, had been sitting for a few weeks. i knew it was borderline before storage. My sister, god love her, insisted on buying me a new battery since ive been helping her with man chores cuz her husband is in afghanistan right now.

first hurdle was my battery cables were too short. so a couple trips to the parts store later and some backyard engineering later battery's in but now this problem.

I ended up catching up on some electrical cleanup while i was at it. stuff that in previous mods/repairs, i told my self Oh ill clean that up later or lets just get this working and then ill go back and clean that up. you guys know how that ends up sometimes right?

so i crawl underneath trying to trace this line and guess what i found? yup, Split and broken lower ball joint boot. The grease didnt look all that fresh either. I inspected it a few months ago and it looked fine. Im guessing i most likely broke it up at browns a while back in the heavy peanut butter snow.

So as far as i recall the ingredients for lbj failure are lift-check, heavy bumper-check, high mileage (180k)-check, split boot- im guessing check.

Dude im not sure i should take this out right now. I was just thinking how paranoid i am of catastrophic lbj failure as so many people are experiencing right now.

with my current employment status i kind of think it would be wreckless to take a less then 100% rig into the field right now. I soo want to go though.

We'll see...

Evap air drain hose

Chris,

I just looked at mine and the air drain hose travels down and goes right into the frame rail... I would assume it doesn't do anything except "drain air"?.. Hope this helps put your mind at ease.

Nate

Thanks for looking nate. Does it disappear into the abyss or does it just terminate there? I was doing a little research last night and i guess the evap system collects and stores evaporated fuel vapors in the charcoal canister for reintroduction back into the intake at a later time. I wonder if the air drain is like an emergency overflow, maybe it goes to the exhaust system perhaps above the cat? Fun to learn about this stuff anyways.

It "terminates" into the driver side frame rail... i pulled on it a little but it is tight. if you look you'll see the hose makes a 90 degree turn into the frame right above the CV on the inside of the driver side rail... No idea if it just stops there or if it goes further back in the frame to an unknown location. Nowhere near the exhaust BTW

Thanks nate! Can you believe it took kid 30 minutes to respond to my thread and the best he could come up with is a lead service tech at toyota?

Ah you know im kidding kid ;) i really appreciate the help. And sorry to all for going off topic on the battery and ball joint above.

No need to apologize... It's YOUR thread! You do what you want :)
I just found my lower ball joints are greasy/ugly too! Gonna get them done on Tuesday though.

lol hey man, it was 2330 when i saw this post and raining out, i didnt know you wanted me to go out and lay in the rain lol. -im just giving you a hard time. i think that drain is just an over over flow vent. i think it dumps into the frame rail just too keep anything(chemical or fuel ect.) that could possibly come out through the vent away from anything that it could harm, ie heat source, rubber seals ect. id drive you runner and see how it feels, if the steering is still tight id say your good to go but that call is ultimately up to you, after all its your rig. and i had the same issue with the battery cables not being long enough, had to do some of my own back yard design and engineering.
