I was wheeling the other day with the center diff on in 4lo through some mud tracks down near a river the other day.

when i came back to the road, i came out of 4lo first, then released the locker but it wouldn't release. It would sit there and blink. After backing up twice about 15 feet and turning the vehicle off and on... and a few F bombs... I finally got it to release.

Is there something finicky about the center locker in the 4th gen that I should know about? Just thought I'd ask... thanks guys !

First, always disconnect any diff lock before getting on the paved road. It sounds as of there was a slight driveline bind front to rear when you tried to unlock it. If the surface has some give the bind usually will dissapate to the point the center diff can unlock.

I don't always have to resort to this but sometimes it takes shallow s-turns with light accelerations and deccelerations to get the center diff lock to release (on a surface with some give/slip).

were you on an even surface?
Iver had mine stick once or twice, but rolling a few feet in reverse then forward took care of it. never needed to turn the truck off.

have you done anymore testing?

In fact, I did go back out to the same area and scouted around a bit. It's a mix of 2track with deep ruts, water holes maybe 12-15" depth, and some slight grade. I've always turned on the locker when heading through the muds and grade in an effort to prevent loss of traction. Maybe I could leave it off, but it seems (from what I understand) that the center lock isn't really locking anything more than equalizing 50/50 power front and rear, not as a true locker locks an axle--- where I'd want to keep it off on other than slippery surfaces.

I was disengaging it immediately out of the last water/mud hole and the surface was dirt and tossed around sparse gravel.

I encountered the same hesitancy to disengage, but after rolling back about a truck length in neutral, 2nd attempt it turned right off without a problem. I don't suppose turning the truck off really did anything aside from me thinking maybe it was an electrical problem and in hopes to reset it turned off/on the vehicle.

Next time I run out here I'll try w/out the lock. Probably not necessary, although I did get on 3 wheels yesterday.

I know, it's funny... I had just washed the truck yesterday... then got the bright idea to go out here with a friend of mine. I didn't get any final photos at the end.

cool pics! its crazy how much shat you can actually drive through without getting the body dirty w/ stock sized tires and running boards!

Looks like fun. If you try with the center unlocked be ready for the VSC to kill the engine output... Try it where you won't get stuck to get an idea of whether you want to hit the deepest parts unlocked.

Yeah the VSC and ATRAC are really awkward at first until I've learned how to slowly adapt to that system of keeping a consistent 2k rpm range and letting the system attempt to work.

I feel wierd when things start to beep at me.... although the system has been fantastic in the snow/ice that we seem to attract here in Ohio... esp the ice.
