Wow sad story, when I flipped my runner we all climbed out the moon roof because it was just a bolt on pop up style moon roof that came off when we flipped. But I never thought of a coup lacking safety in that way.

As far as owning one that wasn't just for commuting, I can't say I do. Toyota went the wrong way with me... They were doing great with RWD Supras, the older RWD and AWD Celicas... but once that changed to FWD cars, I lost my interest.

Front wheel drive sucks. FWD = Chick car IMO. People who build up FWD cars make me wonder why. I've driven tons of FWD cars that are fast, but torque steer and sheer lack of balls makes me hate them. What good is a powerful motor if the steering wheel jerks, if the rear wheels do nothing? No oversteer, no drifting, no donuts, no powerslides, no fun.

Friend of mine has the stiffest Mazda I've ever been in, it's got a turbo, blah, blah... but no matter what, it's front wheel drive. He plans to convert.

FWD is the reason so many sports cars fail... such as the Cadillac Allante, which being the only FWD roadster in it's class during the late 80's and early 90's. It was discontinued after it was pitted to go up against the late R107 560SL, R129 Mercedes Benz SL, and Jaguar XJS.

The car's front-wheel drive (FWD) powertrain was unique in its class, and brought the car in for serious criticism. FWD is rare among high-priced sports and touring cars, as the configuration's frequent tendency toward understeer under heavy cornering, torque steer under heavy acceleration, and a poor front-rear weight balance is not desirable. The Mercedes 560SL — along with the rest of the Allanté's competitors — was rear-wheel drive. Many car magazines and auto enthusiasts argued that no sports car, let alone one at the Allanté's price, should have been FWD.

I feel that stands for any Front Wheel Drive "Sports" car (Celica, TC, Civic Si, Prelude, Forte, Eclipse, Tiburon, and so forth...)

2008-2009 Chevy Cobalt SS (Turbo) would give most RWD sports car a run for the money...actually, would probably spank silly most common RWD on the track...unfortunately, its interior quality and rental car shape killed it.

But, COB is correct in that sports car should be RWD or AWD with RWD bias.

I know what mean when you say FWD sucks but I live in New England and a rear wheel drive car would almost be useless 4 months out of the year, so I would either have a second car or FWD car, or just keep the runner with 4x4 :)

The only time you cant drive a non 4wd car is on the days that it actually snows which is maybe 20 days a year, so its not 4 months long, my dad uses my 4runner every time it snows and on a normal winter i have my 4runner 90% of the time because it doesnt snow everyday.

Ya I know what your saying but this winter we had roughly 2 - 3 snowfalls a week, so I stick to 4x4 or FWD. I have things to do, places to be so I cannot let snow stop me.

How about this new one from Hyundai:2012 Hyundai Veloster First Ride and Video

It seems very interesting...but it does suffer from torsion beam in the rear instead of IRS. But, its rear door design does help with my fear of a coupe design! :D Reliability/durability, like all current Hyundai designs, is still unknown because all their cars are too new to evaluate.

Another car that you may not know about is the Suzuki Kizashi...i have heard a lot of good things about this car (if you can find a Suzuki dealership!). It is cheaper than competitors and has an AWD option, which should be helpful where you live. Reliability has been good from the different car mags. And from the looks of things, it sure has tons of features for the price. And at 22/29, it gets pretty good fuel economy for AWD car...and this car is in between a Camry and Corolla in terms of size.

I think the TC is a solid car, but if i was to go for a sporty car like that i would probably go for a civic si. I would also go for a 4 door for convenience, so the tc would be a no, but it would be fun to own for a little while.

You seem awefully concerned about this car you're not in the market for. Do we need two threads about it?

I have liked these cars for a while, but wanted to know what most peoples opinion was. I wanted the positive and negative feedback to see how these cars are. I am in no financial position to buy one as I am in college and have higher priorities than buying a new car, but nothing wrong with wondering how people feel about them.
