Ex-Jeeper looking to become a T4R owner

Previously owned a 99 Grand Cherokee and had alot of fun with it, but the GC has ALOT of little issues that were killing me and I felt like I was driving a time bomb. Had to sell it and now I'm looking at this beauty for $8,888. I'm 99% sure I'm going to be picking it up Monday.

It's a 99 SR5, 4WD 3.4 V6 auto. The belly looks like it's never seen anything outside of the pavement(like my GC when I bought it)and the body is in perfect shape with hardly any defects. It has the elec locker, sunroof and rear air. I'm not sure of how many miles are on it yet, but does it really matter with Toyota? I've owned Toyota trucks before that had an enormous amount of ABUSIVE miles on them and they ran good as new. I've been wanting another Toyota for a long time and it looks like I found the one. If the dealership was open today I would already have it. Here are a few more pics:

not a bad find, check out autotrader over the weekend, i know there were a few 4runners on there in your area a couple months back when i picked up mine.

If it has over 80K miles that price is a little high for a 99.
I paid 8999 ten months ago from a toyota dealer with119k on it.
Notice that it hasn't got the OEM foglights.
It looks like it got a rear lift?

I too left jeeps. I have a few projects but i needed something to haul a new baby in be able to hunt out of and drive to work. I love mine 1997 212k so far small body lift so far. I can do almost everything in it when i cant i have my truck.
That is a clean lookin runner looks just like mine except i have BFG A/Ts, but you scored a e locker....luckie dang
 
nicely optioned with basket and bar. 3rd gens are strong and reliable. Has the timing belt been done? Just a thought. Happy driving.

What does it mean if it doesn't have the fog lights? Is that a good or bad thing? I don't know much about these vehicles yet so pardon the dumb question. :p I'm not sure about the rear lift. It might be the angle it was parked at? The hitch doesn't look like it's ever been used. It was clean and scratch free like it's never had a receiver put in. :bigok:

I'm not sure about the belts. I don't even know how many miles are on it yet. It has only been on the lot a few days and they were closed today so I couldn't find out. Judging by the condition of it I am guessing it doesn't have alot of miles and I was peaking around and seen a new oil filter so I'm also guessing it has been well taken care of. :bigok:
 
timing belt water pump on the 3rd gen should be replaced at about 80K. if it's not done........you might want to either have it done or have them lower the price. You may want to price that work at a dealer for reference.

You can add aftermarket fog lights easily to the SR5 model that year.

I'm not big on the fog light thing. I've had them on several vehicles and never used them. It's normally pretty clear around here and headlights are more than enough. I'll look into the belts and water pump. I'm assuming it's quite a job on the 4 cam motor though. I try to do all of my mechanic work on my vehicles. I'm not scared to turn a wrench.
 
I just looked up what's involved in the timing belt/water pump replacement and it's not as bad as I thought. About $90 in tools plus about $50 for the belt and $50 for the pump, plus coolant and misc stuff. I figure less than $250 and a half day of cussing in the garage. :p I also read that the 3.4 is a non-interference motor so even if the belt wasn't replaced and it broke it's not a big deal because it won't damage anything.
 
So,do you know the mileage yet?

If it's under 100k then the price is still competitive unless you really want to find a super deal but waiting and looking longer can cost you the deal on a nice sound truck and that one does look lik it wasn't abused.

I've yet to see a member here or on yotatech have a belt break and most go well past 100k (mine was done at 138k) but not recommended but it's not a major thing if it's under 100k.

Check the back inside of the rear drums to see if you spot any leakage since axle seals are prone to leaking around 100k.
 
The recommended timing belt interval is 90k on the 3.4 motor. At least that is what my manual says. I just bought my 4runner. For reference, I gave 9,000 for it. It's a 2000 SR5 with 75k miles, 4WD and it was flawless and one owner. It doesn't have diff lock though, wish it did. No sunroof either.
 
my water pump went out at about 90K. only issue I ever had. I believe I did the timing belt at the same time at the dealer in Marina del Rey where I was working at the time....I cant say they were cheap and since you like to cuss and perhaps throw things in the garage (my kinda afternoon when i was younger) by all means have at it.........

Possibly tomorrow. For some reason the lot was closed all weekend. I can see Sunday, but not Saturday. If they're closed tomorrow I'm not sure what's going on.
 
I like the choice you made. the roof basket looks great on that Runner. When you take it for a test drive put the metal down. Should jump right away and stop on a dime......good luck.
 
Just skimmed the thread, but if you buy the T4R welcome to the club. They are great vehicles, should be a change from owning a Jeep as far a problems go. Hope you buy the T4R pictured above it looks sweet.
 
140k miles on it, timing belts have been changed and from what the salesman says(like you can believe anything they say)the owner was meticulous about taking care of it and changing the fluids. I'm having second thoughts about it. It looks pretty clean though. I just didn't expect that many miles to be on it. I need some time to think about it.....
