Excessive shifter movement

I'm new to 3rd gen 4runners, not to Toyotas, but this one has me wondering. I have a 2001 auto v6 that seems to have excessive movement in the trans shifter. Going over bumps and rolling bumps like on a highway causes movement and flex that seems to be way too much. I know there should be some flex, but I'm pretty sure it has even popped out of drive a few times. Has anyone had this happen?
