Exhaust coming into Cabin

I know this one may be pretty hard to troubleshoot via the internet but here goes.I get a strong exhaust smell in the vehicle at all times.I've looked at the exhaust and it is good from front to back.I'm thinking that it may be coming in through a poor weatherstrip and rusted tailgate.Could it be coming in thru the opening between the inner and outer part of the rear quarter(where they all rust out)?I pulled the rear carpet but there no rust holes in the floor.It's a beast but I want to make it safe to drive.Taking it to a garage is out of the question at $110 an hour. Thanks for the info.

If my rear window, on either of my runners is down even a crack I get gassed. I would suggest packing your fender holes and your tail gate holes with towels or something an see if that helps

what year is it?
my first gen had the tail gate slightly bent out and it was trying to kill me every time i rode with the windows up.. couldn't even tell!

it looked fine..


but from the inside..
there was about a 4 centimeter gap that allowed air in..
now i have a beautiful red tail gate.. :/

If I have my back window down a bit for whatever reason driving around town I smell exhaust fumes every now and then. Not so much on the highway at higher speeds though.

Thanks.I need a new tailgate seal for sure.I'm going to investigate ways of sealing the rot so I can drive my 92 without poisoning myself.

I just replaced my muffler and the exhaust from the muffler to the rear of my 4-Runner and the fumes went away. I have leaks in all my windows and I was getting gassed all the time but the new system stopped all that. The muffler shop turned the end of the pipe down a little. That may have helped.
