Anyone have the Magnaflow cat-back ?
Supposedly, from links I've read the Borla won't work w/ the 05 w/o making cuts and re-welds.
My local muffler guy said stay away from Borla go Magnaflow.
Any opinions or suggestions ?
Thanks

I don't have the catback ... but I do have just the muffler itself and I love it ..

anyway, hope someone else can chime in on this thread.

Just a heads up on the 4runner exhaust system. I did some research on the 4th gen system, since I was pleased with the dependablity of the exhaust system on my 95 Landcruiser, it was in great shape after 9 years and 130K miles. Found out that both the LC and the 4th generation 4runner have stainless steel exhaust systems and you need to make sure you are not down grading your exhaust if you go to an aftermarket system. Just do your home work before you buy something.

i have a free flow exhaust. it was a natural process of elimination in the harsh terrain in moab. apparently the exhaust took the bullet so now i am missing the muffler portion.

as for aftermarket, i'd recommend the borla as they're a great company that makes quality products. most all mufflers now was stainless steel but it doesn't hurt to double check. just find a spot to tuck it up and hide it from the environment and you're set!

if you like the dual exhaust look, check w/ the installer to see if they can make it a dual exhaust too :)

good luck and don't forget to post pictures!

yes i put a magnaflow cat back on my 04.
its sounds great the drone isnt to much, my friiend had his 04 grand cherokee done with te same system and his drone is very anoying. and i can tell i little difference in the power from a sit still other than that not to much.

I am thinking about going the magnaflow route also. got a few ques, if anyone can chime in:

Does the magnaflow system (pn#:15781) work with an 03 Sport Ed (X-reas)?

anybody have a sound clip?

are there any online retailers selling for <500.00??

thanks in advance

Magnaflow 15781

Magnaflow catback 15781 quoted $411 shipped, perhaps a little cheaper if others are interested. PM me..........

Magnaflow 15781 & 05' V-8

FYI
Intermediate Pipe does not line-up w/ 05' V-8 hanger.
I didn't go any further w/ the other parts.
I have an SE, don't know if it works w/ other 05' V-8 mdls.
Fortunately I live very close to Magnaflow Corp.
I have an appt w/ their R&D people next week.
They seem interested to help, but I didn't get the feeling they actually believe me.
I took I/P to a local Magnaflow installer, he said it didn't look right.
I stopped by a local Toyota Dealer, crawled under a new V-6, it lines up just fine.
I will post the outcome......

I have the TRD dual exhaust on my 05 V8 with XREAS. Because of the extra XREAS stuff, the spare tire will no longer fit, but the exhaust bolts right up with no problem :) I'm never too far away (cellphone) that I cant get my brother to bring me my spare so I dont care about not having a spare...If I plan to travel really far, I'll just stick it in the back.

Sounds like you have a design error (LMAO) :wtf:

nah...they actually tell you that the trd dual exhaust wont fit with the XREAS ;)

HERE
it will bolt up just fine..but there's not enough room to put the spare back

the install pics show the driver's side exhaust pipe going between the spare tire and the frame...but with the XREAS the spare tire is right up on the frame...no room for the pipe. So I just left off the spare tire ;)

Just hope you never rear end someone when that spare is in your cargo area, you'll be wearing it for a hat!!
Wonder why the TRD exhaust won't fit. I've got an 04 Limited with XREAS and the Borla fit fine. Can't imagine there were any substantial changes?:bash:

Thats pretty kewl that Carson put a link back to this website to explain XREAS

05' V8 Exhaust re: Magnaflow 15781

The reason it doesn't fit is because the length of the exhaust manifold to cat-back connection is different from the 04 V8's.
I assume it effects the Borla, just not the same exact place.
I have an appt w/ Magnaflow R&D next week, I'll post the results.

Follow-up re: Magnaflow 15781 & 05 V8

Took my 05 V8 to Magnaflow R&D today, they modified the intermediate pipe hanger & installed the catback free of charge.
They took numerous fotos for future design mod so others will avoid this problem.

It sounds GREAT !!!!!!!!!!
Haven't had it on the fwy yet, but around town there is no drown to be complaining about.

I'm actually looking into picking the Magnaflow cat back up. Did they mention when they will have the hanger placement corrected for those of us with the sport? Also how does it sound? Is it loud or just mellow? I have magnaflow mufflers on my Saleen and love them. Any pics of your setup would be great too!

P.S. Where can I pick up the system for $411 shipped?

Thanks,
George.

05' V8 & Magnaflow 15781

I think the fitment issue applies to all 05' V8's.
I'm not 100% on that. Mine is the SE but the problem was not the same as those that have tried the Borla/TRD from what I've read on this and another forum.
To answer your questions, they said it would probably be a couple of weeks before the mod was available. They have an 800#, check their website. You can always call and ask them.
Ask for Jim in the technical dept, mention the problem and he should remember, I talked to him enough.
I purchased from Performance Peddler, two of us negotiated and paid $375 shipped/total. I was very pleased w/ the price. Mention this forum and he should do the same for you.
I was looking at $500 here, thru a local shop.
It has a nice deep rumble on acceleration and mellows at a cruise. I wouldn't say it's loud but you know it's there and it isn't OE. I'll try and take a couple of fotos this wknd and either post or fire them off to you.

He has been sent 2 emails re: mdl 15781 Magnaflow and my specific experience.

Both myself and the other buyer happen to be in Cal, his was drop shipped from Magnaflow, mine from MI. His worked out fine for him. I think he has an 04' V8.
The website has a sketch of their system, it's easy to find.
The actual muffler is their largest, 22", it is a lot lighter and doesn't hold the heat compared to the OE muffler.
If I can answer any other Q's, let me know.

Jacks I really appreciate the information. I'll give magnaflow a call to see if the problem has been corrected and I will also contact Brad on pricing. I have to swap out the h-pipe in my Saleen this coming month in order to sneek it through state inspection so it would be the perfect time to bolt up an exhaust on the 4Runner as well. I do have one last question that just popped into my head. Have you noticed any improvement in gas mileage with this system?

Thanks,
George.

I was the other buyer of the Magnaflow system that jackz has mentioned. Performance Peddler is an easy company to deal with- very smooth transaction. I got the system within a few days after placing the order. good thing shipping is free because the box was 50lbs.

the system itself is awesome. I really don't have any problem with the sound or the 2k drone. I feel that it is tolerable and I expect it to be on my vehicle for a long time.

btw, I have the 03 V8 sport ed, and the installation was fairly quick at the shop.

I did initially show an improvement in mileage after a reset. the computer showed 21.4 mpg (my comp is about 0.7 off w/ stock exhaust) and this is with a 74 mi roundtrip freeway commute. so that would mean I was getting about 20.7 mpg. I never got the chance to actually hand calculate since intallling the new exhaust b/c my commute has since changed and I now drive mostly city streets, the comp now reads 18.6
