Hey everyone I was think of getting an exhaust for my 99 Limited, any Recommendations? I know theres a TRD one but its out of my price range. Also does anyone have any recommendations on any Mufflers that would add that beasty V8 sound if the Exhaust systems are too much? Thanks

I am in the market myself and had good luck with the Flowmaster 60 series when I had a 2nd GEN 4Runner with the 22Re 4 cylinder. I am leaning towards a Flowmaster 60 again for my 99 but slightly upsizing the bore diameters (you can pick from several sizes of input/output of the muffler)
The lower the Flowmaster series number the more aggressive the sound. 60 was fine for me, the 70s sounded a bit wimpy, while the 50 was too much "bass" , again in my humble opinion.
Magnaflow also makes great stuff, though I am not sure if I have ever heard one. They also make and sell catalytic converters-and you could recoup some cost selling back your old cat for the scrap value.
Personally I would never do a muffler exchange without doing the cat at the same time. They do indeed plug up, especially if your truck is not allowed to run for hours on end, like a highway run of some significant distance. It's a cheap prevention of any problems while you are having the exhaust done properly. I used Summit Racing to find cats and mufflers to pick from.
I once had a lowly Mazda GLC that had 2 cats for some unknown reason for it's less than stellar 4cyl. and it was plugged enough to blow exhaust gaskets off the manifold, twice before it was diagnosed properly.
There are a number of threads on this and some include sound clips so you can sample what you want to buy. I would encourage having the downpipe (off the engine) enlarged to around 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 inches and run that diameter to the cat and then the muffler and out the rear (side) to increase performance.
And don't forget the impact of the O2 sensor-location/operation while you are at it....

i was thinking about an exhaust for my 99 sr5 4x4 and just 2 days ago after some looking around and talking to people i got the flowmaster 40 series delta flow. 132$including tax and labor
it sounds amazing that beastly sound from a v6 well worth it if i were you i would just add a muffler and leave the rest of the exhaust alone unless you wanted a tip or something.
Also i could tell a big difference in acceleration i used to not keep up with cars pull out of a green light but now a easily catch them im not sure if its more horsepower or becasuse i give it more gas to hear it roar. Flowmaster 40 is the way to go its the loudest muffler they make!
Also becasuse flowmasters are high flow exhaust it cools your engine better making the life of plastic parts like hoses and belts last longer

I also have a flowmaster 40 series deltaflow and its sounds great when i jump on the throttle. And i noticed huge performance upgrades (did deckplate and isr at the same time). Just a warning tho the muffler is loud! At a certain rpm around 2300 i believe it can drone and become annoying. But ive read up and all 4runners have that drone with aftermarket mufflers. I would recommend a flowmaster but if i get a new one i will probably try a magnaflow or a quieter flowmaster (there isnt too many tho). At highway speeds the noice is not noticed i believe wind noise and the sound being left behind are factors in that.
I don't need or want an "exhaust" for mine. IMHO, a V6 just doesn't sound good with a loud exhaust - like a V8 does. What I am interested in is a replacement tailpipe. Mine is far from smoothly bent where it goes over the axle, and it is egg-shaped at the outlet. Any suggestions for a good replacement with smoother bends? I don't necessarily need a mandrel bent piece, but I can't help but think there is considerable restriction in my existing pipe.
Has anyone used one from Walker (NAPA)? I have bought nicely made exhaust pipes from them in the past.

I had a flowmaster super 40 on mine for about a year, but I ended up taking it off a few months ago. Now the music sounds better and my passengers are happier. It sounds tough when you start up your engine, but once the droning kicks in, it can get a bit loud. The only other muffler I might consider getting would be the Dynomax Super Turbo because it seems to have that V8 sound, and I hear it doesn't get too loud.

after someone cut out my catalytic converter the other week, i bought a doug thorley (Jardine) cat-back system for $240 shipped (its now $330 for some reason, i guess i got lucky!). It looks really nice and well made but my new cat hasnt come in yet (I got an Eastern brand, direct fit for $200 shipped). I have been dying to get it working again and can't wait for the cat to come. When it does and I get it all installed I'll let post pics/review of sound/performance.
