Exhaust manifold leak/tick

Are they paying for it?

the warranty company is paying only if the inspector they send out can see the crack, which will happen only if the manifold is exposed, and that it is cracked. thats why if the mechanic at this other shop does not think it is cracked, im not gonna do it. i think it is though, i did smell the sulfer smell today with windows closed and interior circulation on.

Just bought a used 04 4Runner, V8 Sports Edition with 115K miles from a private seller back in mid-Nov. I've heard this ticking noise twice, once today and about a week ago. The ticking noise comes from the passenger side of the vehicle and after reading all 9 pages of this thread, I'm pretty sure I got a cracked manifold. Though, the noise will go away within a few seconds. Now, that I know I have this noise, I'll listen more carefully during start ups, i.e. does it only happen when it's cold???

Funny thing about this is that I believe the prior owner complained about a roten eggs smell when he brought it to a local Toyota dealership for an oil change. I haven't noticed the roten eggs smell yet.

Many people have asked if this problem can go unfixed. Well, yes, but as others have mentioned if you live in a state with emissions testing, you may run into a problem. Also, if you do I deed have cracked manifold then isn't the problem just going to get worst as metal corrodes?

its covered under warranty if under 100,000 miles. i had mine done about a year ago.
Even if you bought it used at CarMax? I just got mine about 2 months ago and after driving it hard I smell a very strong sulfur smell....it just broke 58,000 miles so I hope it's covered because I don't like to sound of $2,000.......

I'm very interested to hear if Toy2 came up with an aftermarket solution. I too have the crack on the passanger side manifold and at some point need to get it replaced. Right now, $1500 is not in the cards. An aftermarket solution would be great!

After market solutions have been sought on other boards and there are none. Every V8 model year (from 03-06 IIRC) had the engine bay configured in a sightly different fashion. 99% of aftermarket manufactures are not going to mass produce a different product for each model year. You are better off paying a custom exhaust shop to make custom headers for you... but you are going to spend a lot more than OEM manifolds installed at the dealer.

I had my local dealer replace the two farther back Cats a couple of months ago. I still have the sulfur smell... recently I have noticed my exhaust is louder than usual when under load too. I'm going to take it in and have them check for cracked manifolds and hopefully get it covered under the 8 year/80,000 mile Emissions warranty.

Damn, it looks like I am another victim of the cracked right manifold on my 2004 4Runner V8.

I have just over 84K on it and started hearing the exhaust leak tick a few weeks ago. I took it to the dealer today and they confirmed the right manifold is cracked.

I opened a claim with Toyota customer satisfaction and they are investigating it now with the dealer to see if they will cover it.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have to eat this one.

I have a slight leak on my manifold and I am going to take it to the dealership. I have 89K miles on my truck but it is Certified so hopefully they will replace the manifolds and cats!

I took mine in yesterday and the service advisor didn't think the manifolds would be covered and I told him that several people that had certified vehicles had gotten them done. He made a quick phone call and said everything would be covered and sent me on my way in one of their rental cars. He said they are not going to replace the cats. I'm over the mileage for the emissions warranty anyway, but I'd figure I'd ask. My truck should be done today.

Ive mentioned this on another thread, but you guys that are have having issues with ex manifold cracks, blown ex gasgets and broken cats all need to learn to let your 4runner idle for at least 30 seconds before driving... better if its a minute or two just to warm up a bit slower - Especially with the V8's

What does that have to do with anything? Mine gets remote started and runs for at least several minutes before driving.

Has to do with thermal exspansion of metals, in particular two dwo different metals bolted together with a gasket in the middle (Cast iron in contact with cast steel or aluminium). The bolts are a high tensile strenght, carbon steel (1.5%) typically cured with amonia (nitriding) and take the longest of the bunch to fully expand at temperature but are both stronger and tougher then the manifold. The CI manifold is more rigid with a similar hardness but are designed to deal with vibrations and high temperatures. They are the weak spot on the sytem when it comes to thermal exsapansion. As for the Cats, they do also do not deal with exspansion very well due to the number of different metals inside of them.

I'm like you, I let mine warm up with for several minutes, I know people who start it up and drive imediatly and have issues with gasgets and so on with out letting it warm up properly. Saying that keep ideally its good to keep revs under 3000. IMHO these problems are all to do with the way the vehicles are being used, or from overtightening bolts.

Here in lies the problem. How many Americans out there do you honestly think register this logic of thinking? Maybe there's a certain percentage out there that knows it's not good to accelerate hard on a good engine. For me, I always let my vehicles warm up to normal operating temperature before accelerating hard.

We also have to remember that at one point in time the 4Runner's we own today had 0 miles on them. I bought mine used with 100K + miles, but I have no idea on how it was previously driven or if it was even broken in properly. I can only guess that it was because I've had zero issues with it and my gas mileage is still great.

This is a good point, I only know this stuff because we run 8000 KW backup gereators for our steam plant (and I took 4 years of engineering). Warm up time before they go onload (unless in an emergency) is 15 minutes and cooldown time (offload) is 20 minutes. So I use this principle on my V8 and always warm it up and cool it down with a few minutes of idle and never have problems. Even at a gas station I never see anybody with large engines let it cool for a minute or two, as for starting up at a gas station, its already warm so there's reason to wait, just start and go.

As for william asking what this has to do with anything, this is the root cause for these issues people are having.
