Exhaust modification help

hello everyone,

I really dont know much about exhaust but i am looking into getting a muffler for my 01 4runner and i dont want one that is to loud i just want one that is a little bit louder than the stock and for it to have a little roar. If you have any suggestion please help me out.

never tried one on a 4Runner but in my mustang days Flowmaster 40's, delta or not, were the kings of resonance, they would vibrate change in my ash tray!! it was all good though since i was trying to make as much noise as possible lol.
 
He is asking for something not too loud and you recommend a flowmaster 40 series?

If you don't want too loud, keep in mind the smaller in length the replacment muffler typically the louder it will be. A flowmaster 50 series delta flow or the Borla XR-1 (the longer 40492 model) woud be a good fit.

"Loud" is really subjective. The Deltaflow have more of a growl and much less resonance. Will you hear an feel it inside, sure. Then again it's not a stock muffler. Yes straight up 40 series are loud, had them on some of my cars before. The 50 series has a slight rumble, but is pretty quiet overall. I am not a fan of the raspy sound from it at higher RPM's.
 
Thrush Welded, only 30 bucks at autozone. No drone with all the windows up. can't hear it at all with the windows up and music playing at low volume. I was really scared it would sound ricey and cheap but I love it.

That sounds pretty decent. I may need to check that out as well.

That sounds pretty good for a $30 muffler.
 
I have a Flowmaster Delta 40 and it's loud for sure. The drone inside the car is enough to interfere with the stereo unless you crank the volume. Also the loudest drone is around 1800 RPM which kinda sucks if you have an automatic. That said I'm psyched- sounds awesome, lets out a mean, snarling V6 growl.

If you don't want something too loud I would recommend the Delta 50.
 
Also whether or not you have the hood insulation installed, makes a huge different with in-cabin drone. I took it out and now I can hear it a lot more. But I like it :love:
 
I went with a Borla 40665 Turbo XL, large muffler, fits perfect, just barely louder than stock at idle, in fact I wouldn't even say it is "louder" as much as just a different "tone" at idle.
With deckplate mod open and AirRaid Intake it does sound good WO throttle though.
No noticeable drone.

It certainly breathes considerably better than stock and I am getting about 1-2mpg better mileage on highway, not sure about city mileage yet.
