Exhaust Recommendations

I haven't posted in YEARS so after 197k it has finally happened. Exhaust became disconnected and rusted through where it meets the muffler. I have no complaints though. For a 14 year old vehicle I have been lucky that between this and needing a new radiator recently, my runner has been without many issues other than the normal wear and tear.


It's still my daily driver and I'm hoping to save it for my daughter when she turns 16 in 6 years so fingers crossed that it makes it there.


What is my cheapest option? I took to local exhaust shop and he said "you're f*cked. I can't weld paper."


My mechanic recommended a bosal. I'm looking for best bang for the buck (i.e. I'm not looking for TRD exhaust). Looking for simple bolt on option where I can install it myself.

So it looks like the Walker System is the cheapest replacement for the OEM but they don't make a SS (stainless steel) replacement. So I ask again, best bang for the buck where I won't have to worry about this for another 5-10 years? Gibson looks promising. I would like to finally use the rear window after all these years and the terrible sulfur smell so a side exhaust would be icing on the cake!

Hmm, did you check on the Walker site? I was able to find the Walker Quiet-Flow stainless steel for your 2004 4Runner.

Any exhaust shop can just make a section, I find them to be better made that way than mass produced, sure to fit stuff.

New muffler with a new rear section that dumps behind the rear wheel, done.

Exact same thing happened to my sister's. I bought a Gibson cat-back stainless steel exhaust, part # is 618815. I would not buy anything that's aluminized, especially if you're in the rust belt, it's going to last a couple years, max. Walker was my first pick, but after reading the reviews on Amazon, I stayed away. They say it's stainless steel, but according to the images from customers who had theirs rust away in a couple years, it seems to be junk.

The Walker Quiet-Flow stainless steel muffler is eligible for their limited lifetime warranty.

"Walker warrants qualifying exhaust products against defects and wear-out when used on private passenger cars and light trucks under normal operating conditions for as long as such original purchaser owns the vehicle on which they were originally installed."

This is one of the reasons why I put it on my 03 Limited.
 
The main Walker website just lists what they have available by vehicle, with no prices. Once you confirm the part number, then you can check other automotive retailers. Up here in Canada, for example, Walker is readily available at Canadian Tire stores.

I only replaced the muffler and piping just ahead of it, and was able to re-use my resonator.

Gibson also has a lifetime warranty and includes the tail pipe section, but if you want to keep replacing your exhaust every couple years, go with Walker.

The galvanized OEM version lasted 14 years.
You want to keep it and give to your daughter in 6 years = OEM.
Cheap out now and there won't be anything to give her.
 
If you are looking for a quiet exhaust, the Gibson is NOT it.
(I have a Gibson exhaust)

Back in the day, I was not impressed with the Bosal welds.

Walker/Magnaflo is my go to for OEM quality.

If you are able to see/touch the actual exhaust parts before purchase, I would consider doing that. :spy:
 
Thanks for all the responses. I'd love to be able to find a used factory exhaust and priced out a new one at the local dealer and it was just shy of $800. Again, not looking to get cheapest fix either but really best value.
 
Will a 4th Gen V8 exhaust fit a 4th gen V6 as far as a replacement? Found one local that is being parted out.

Also will a 5th generation 4runner exhaust work on a 4th gen? I found a local used one.
