exhaust rusting apart... what are my options?

so my 04 has spent its life here in chicago salty winters and the exhaust is bad shape... i took it in today to get the tail pipe welded back onto the muffler cause it has rusted off.... they guy welded it but its thin and will likely break again soon. the original flex pipe has been cut off already and a piece welded in but that leaking and rusty as well.... basically looks like i need a whole new exhaust from the cats back. what are my options?? keep in mind im broke...

find a take offf stock system?
custom make somethin?

what have u guys done/ suggest?

if you are planning to keep it, have it replaced with an OEM or if not, an aftermarket. that's the proper way to fix it than just patching the holes. this way, you will not worry about fixing again in a few years.

since you are broke, another way is to get it from a salvage yard. find a car of the same model that you have and start from there.

I replaced from the cat back with a Walker replacement muffler and tailpipe assembly. Lifetime warranty. Cost about $250-$280 IIRC.
 
Chances are that was probably aluminized steel. If you plan on keeping more than a few more years, definitely go with something that is stainless steel.
 
That is why I suggested the Walker brand. It has a lifetime warranty on the parts. If you don't mind replacing it every 5 years, then it's worth it. A new catback from Toyota starts creeping way above $500-600.
 
Yea I was lookn at the Gibson catback, it's 340 in full stainless or 270 in alum ... Seems like a deal for stainless? Anyone have one? Info?
 
I was in the same boat, my stock tailpipe rusted off of the muffler. I didn't want to spend a lot to replace it, so I went with the Gibson system.

The install was pretty easy and the fit is good. The tailpipe sits kinda close to my spare tire, but it hasn't melted or anything yet. I didn't really notice any performance improvements, maybe a little less downshifting when going up hills, etc. but that's it. It sounds pretty good, still sounds like a V6 but a little bit deeper exhaust note than stock. Minimal drone.

If you do end up going with this system, make sure you get a new gasket for between the stock Y-pipe and the new mid pipe. The Gibson system is not designed to use constant tension springs, so you don't need to worry about replacing those.
