first off i have done the search and read that 15 page post on this but there wasnt much on 3rd gens. so anyway whenever im crusin with the back window down and i step on the gas a little hard or when im goinb up a hill i smell an interesting smell. its not quite sulfer/rotten egg but i duno its noticable. I use cheveron gas, and i recently cleaned my throttle body and of course O'd the "D" gasket out. do any of you notice any smells with your exhaust? It doesnt smell like anything at idle thanks!

its probably just the way your exhaust smells. Im guessing you dont have a rear wind deflector do you?

yeah ive got one, the o gasket mod is basicly cutting your tb gasket its in the shape of a D and the flat part of the "D" kinda restricts some air flow so yeah its all over this forum.
anyway, yeah it has a slight bad smell but its very faint. i dont know if its a bad thing i dont want to be polutin ya know?

i'll never drive with ONLY the back window down...it'll creat a low pressure area behind the truck which pulls in the exhaust fumes. it's not an odd smell, just something you're not used to, or shouldnt be breathing in...it's just exhaust gasses you wouldn't otherwise smell

when ever a buddy of mine is following me and i really start getting into the throttle alot they smell it i guess bad enough that they back off alot and i have smelt it also its awful but cant figure it out. thought it was a cat going bad but not setting any lights on dash. all i have is magnaflow dual exhaust and aintake tube with decklate mod. nothing really fancy. if any one has an idea im listening

did they magnaflow have fiberglass in it when it was purchased? CherryBombs have fiberglass and it burns out, especially when you step on it.

My muffler stunk soooo bad when I first had it for about a month. haha

but now the fiberglass is burned out, no smell, and a deeper tone!

This is most likely the case. TRD did you replace your exhaust? My TRD exhaust makes that smell and I have had it for a couple weeks now. My old Dynomax made the smell for about a month then disappeared. Does a rotten egg smell mean a catalytic converter is on its way out? I'm starting to get that smell along with the burning fiberglass stench a little.

oh yeah i dont drive with just the back window down thats just craziness haha but yes i did replace my exhaust almost a year ago, just the muffler though, i love the sound but the smell is very wierd but unique. its not quite the nasty rotten egg, ive smelled that before and its not the new muffler/ burning break smell. maybe a mix of them with sometjing else? its crazy. i know this is bad and im probably going to die doing this but when its justt idle i go back there and sniff my pipe (prob looks kinda funny lol) and there is no smell at all.
but yes a rotten egg smell could be the cat. its caused by sulfer in gas messin up the converer or something along those lines.
anyway i tried a different cheveron cause some say it could be the gas causing that smell. ill let yall know if i get a stink. do you guys with the same problem use diferent gas stations every time you fill up?

up until recently, I used Wally World gas. But I've come to realize that it sucks. haha

I now use Valero and Shell's Unleaded Plus but I still get a funny smell when I step on the pedal, but that may just be from the intense heat.

i use chevron probably 90 percent of the time, but just a heads up TRD, are you using medium grade or regular unleaded? we utahns are supposed to be using medium grade. supposed to have 87 or higher octane and regular is 85 what a rip.

yeah i know 85 is just dumb. but yeah i use it, i know the manual says higher but i used to get better milage with it then the mid grade maybe i need to change it now that i did some mods??

ive heard, dont quote me on this tho haha that we can use 85 in the winter cause its easier to combust but now that its getting warmer you should use the 88.

thats mid grade right? im gonna prob start using it. i put it in my last run and got 309 to a tank it still smelled but i went back to 85 from a different pump. i havent had a chance to smell it cause of the weather. but yea my last 2 runs were way crappy i got like 230 i dont know whats goin on. haha!

its not the fiberglass smell cause it also did it a little bit before the new exhaust system and i did smell the differance for a while after install. but now just the bad smell. not sure but i guess ill live with it i cant smell it up front anyway haha. thanks

Im not completely positive of this but ive found by reading other posts and from looking at my t4r that maybe your valve cover gaskets are leaking? I read a post on someone stating that their gaskets were leaking and it would leak a slight bit of oil not enough to make an oil spot on the ground but enough to leak down the side of the engine and it would initially burn in the engine bay. Maybe this is that "Burnt smell" your talking about... If you look on your engine look at the valve covers and look to see if you see any blackish oil leaking down the sides.

Then go to stealership and get robbed for 24.00 ea valve cover gaskets and change em out! I already bought mine just waiting till after finals to get started since if i dont finish in time i will be out of a DD for a day... Oh and while your down there you may as well change your spark plugs and some people say the spark plug gaskets usually will crumble so you may need those as well but ill just wait and if it happens ill run to stealership and get robbed again and buy them. Oh and no im not buying spark plugs there... they tried to get me too since im only 18 and they think we know nothing.

Maybe that could help a bit in reviving this thread.

thanks man, yeah i still have that smell, i was doin some back country skiing a while ago, my buddy and i would sit in the back while my other buddy drove us up the mountain and i could still smell it

it doesn't look like my heads are leaking though however im pretty sure i have the original plugs in there. i gotta call in to the dealership and see if they replaced them during the timing belt.

thanks for the heads up though, i just got a CEL today :redbrick: P0171, im gonna clean the MAF run some fuel cleaner and hope that does it. otherwise its gonna be a new 02 sensor i think...

Oh okay i was just looking through your threads and remembered mine making that odd smell. Well glad you dont have the problem!

ouch on the CEL.... i dont remember if that was the code i had and all i had to do was clean MAF and no more cel.
Would suck if you have to buy new o2s. GL with finding the problem!
