exhaust smell?

thanks man, im crossin my fingers cleaning the MAF did the trick. i also added some of injector clearner, im a little worried thought cause the MAF is only a year old. and who knows how old those O2 sensors are. Booo for sure.

BTW i was looking at my heads and it looks like i do have some old oil and dirt gunked up on the corner. nothing fresh though, and there is nothing on the exhaust headers that shows its been burning onto it.

Np yeah if it doesnt work a first time try cleaning twice because i had to clean mine a few times to get it fully cleaned up. ouch yeah that does seem like it could make a turn for the 02s.

Huh. Wonder where its from or just something that happen to get there. Dont take my word on this but i think if your valve cover gaskets needed replacing i think it would be alot worst then that like all around the seals like on mine you can see where the oil seeps down the sides. I dont lose that much oil to really worry about it but i want to keep this thing at least until i graduate college and i like taking care of my things so im doing them anyway. Plus like you said its old. Maybe you can clean it up and check back in a little while and see if you see anything else.

Oh also i usually only smell it when it is really hot outside and im putting my foot into a bit in traffic or something when the engine gets very hot and thats when i can smell the oil start seeping and burn. Other than that it doesnt really leak at all. but since you dont have oil running down the seals i guess your smell is something from exhaust. Btw i love that spintech muffler you have. It sounds great! You can barely tell its there @ idle but still gives a nice tone on acceleration. I Hate loud mufflers with a passion and for the price on that thing its hard to go wrong nice find!

My 4Runner smells the same way and so did my dad's. I thought it was just something in the exhaust. Never really worried about it.

maybe your valve cover gaskets are leaking? I read a post on someone stating that their gaskets were leaking and it would leak a slight bit of oil not enough to make an oil spot on the ground but enough to leak down the side of the engine and it would initially burn in the engine bay.

This is a good point.

I believe you can check for this by taking a rag or paper towel and placing it loosely over the tailpipe while revving up a bit. If you are burning oil through the exhaust, the white rag will show oil spots.

That is what the dealer told me when I had a valve cover gasket leak. I already had oil dripping down my engine but they did the exhaust check to verify.

Valve cover gaskets are pretty common after 100k - kind of like a right of passage. Hopefully thats not the case but I would check if I were you.
