Exhaust Smell

I have a 2010 SR5 and have noticed strong exhaust smell while driving with the back window down.

Anyone else experience this?

Also, I read on some older threads about a sulfur smell for 4th gen.......i have experienced this a few times already on my 5th gen.

The 5th gen doesn't get the sulfur smell since it doesn't have a resonator like the 4th gen. What you are smelling is just the new exhaust it will go away after awhile

Thanks for the quick response and that is good to hear.

I love the back window and hoped this won't happen all the time!

More and more, this forum is becoming a breeding ground for mis-information.

I bet to differ - had mine 11 months & 8k, if I step on it with the back window down....wow strong 'sulfur' smell. If you get out of the 4R shortly after that you can smell it for a few minutes standing next to it.

I have experienced the same sulfur smell with the back window down (typically when accelerating). I have a '10 Limited with approx. 3500 miles. I'm hoping this will go away over time.

+1

It is really noticeable when you accelerate a little harder than average. Doggie always hangs his head out the rear window (of course!), and I wonder if it is bad for him over years of doing this??? Wonder if he breathes it in a whole lot more than us in the front seat...I guess he does. If you have any of the other windows or the sunroof open, there is definitely a wind that goes from the rear window forward, so dogs love the sensation.

FX,

Yep you will get the sulfur/exhaust smell with the back window down while driving at speed. Experiment with opening the second row windows a bit to get the air to flow through the open back window rather then getting sucked back into the truck.

HUH? Every person that ive spoken to has it, Ive had my rig since July and I have it just as bad as my 4th gen.

Well that sucks for you guys I have experienced no sulfur smell. I no longer had the sulfur smell on my 4th gen after I replaced the factory exhaust. I don't have factory exhaust on this 4runner either so maybe that is the difference? But honestly I never noticed it before I had the exhaust done either?

actually, the sulfur smell on the 4G was due to the catalytic converter, and the 5G obviously has one of those. there was a TSB issued for the 4G; customers who experienced the rotten egg smell (and/or complained/knew about the TSB) had their cats replaced.

Never had my cat replaced and I owned it from 04 until 2010?

I recall someone posting that they had replaced the headers and the rotten egg smell had gone away. Logic would say that if this were true then the rotten egg smell is coming from the first set of cats.

that's why it was a TSB and not a recall: not everyone experienced it.

my '06 stunk a bit when you really stepped on it with the rear window down. but the reality is that the exhaust routed straight out the back (and not to the side) simply has a tendency to draw some exhaust in the rear when the window is down due to the airflow pattern of the moving vehicle.

A good person to ask would be Harper I believe he has headers.

I wonder why I haven't smelled it? I wonder if it is just kinda hit and miss with the 4th gen 4runners? I actually just amused that the 5th gen didn't have the smell the only smell I ever had was the new exhaust smell which smells like hot metal or welding.

hamilton, where does your aftermarket exhaust exit? Is it different then where the tip normally comes out?

No factory exit a few people said they notice it while accelerating harder I drive mine pretty nice as I beat the crap out of my 4th gen maybe that why I didn't smell anything prior to the new exhaust or after? I know on the 4th gen section one of the moderators had the smell he cut off the resonator and routed the exhaust out the side and the smell was gone.

I would never drive with just my rear window down. Exhaust fumes will come into the car and have no way to escape (just look how dirty it gets when wheeling from kicked up dust). I remember reading if the back window was going to be down you should also have other windows down to keep air moving through the vehicle.

Just my opinion.
