Exhaust Sounds

Guys, I just visited the Borla exhaust web site and listened to the sound clip from the "truck/SUV". It got me thinking, do you all who do exhaust mods really want your 4R to sound like this? Don't get me wrong, it sounds good, but not for an SUV that isn't exactly known as being something that lights up the eighth mile or the race track...or for that matter, any SUV.

I realize this is all opinion but do those exhaust sounds really fit with the SUV character? Sure they are off road machines if you want them to be but I'm not sure how that justifies a "mean" and loud sounding exhaust. Can someone possibly enlighten me? Do you all think this sound fits with the 4runner which in addition to being an offroad vehicle is also in many parts seen as a...dare I say...luxury vehicle?

I have had a aftermarket exhaust on every vehicle I have ever owned along with a K&N filter. I think depending on the vehicle yes a after market exhaust fits however the 4runner in bone stock form with a exhaust maybe not so much. I have a magnaflow on my Trail but it fits the profile with my lift and tires and what not. but I can see how it might be weird to hear a bone stock limited on 20's with the same exhaust drive by. But to each is his own I like a aftermarket exhaust.

Borla's always sound tinny/raspy to me.I love my DT headers and Flowmaster exhaust and wouldn't have it any other way.To each his own I guess but you don't have to drive a top fuel dragster to enjoy a exhaust note. I've put headers and exhaust on practically every car or truck I've owned.Just makes it more fun to drive for me and I use my sport shift ,rowing thru gears on a regular basis now that I have it. The best shift point for rev matching is about 4500rpm.Not a bit of tranny hesitation.You can't hear that with stock exhaust!

Listen to the 4Runner in this video in the first few minutes from the Baja 1000 race last year for a sweet sound. My Runner sounds pretty close to theirs although not sure what exhaust mods they had.
Speaking of which , I see Ivan Stewart is racing in the Stock Mini class again in a truck #778 .Anybody have any info on if he's in the 4Runner again or what he is driving this year.It started today.Score-International - Baja 1000 Start Positions and Class Order

Wow, that sounds bad ass and it certainly fits with the vehicle in that environment. So he says it was a stock 5th gen but it certainly didn't look stock to me. Was it really stock?

What exhaust did you install to get yours to sound similar to the baja 4r? Also, is there any way to get the benefits of a modded exhaust (mpg, hp, etc.) without the sound coming with it?
