Experience With Baja vs Gobi

I ordered my GOBI in early September from Trail Duty - very responsive, timely, etc. I knew going in it was going to be a long wait with potential frustrations. After a lot of research I found it’s the rack, look and functionality I needed, so the juice is worth the squeeze IMO. It will get here when it gets here.

Take your time with the rack ordering/waiting process. They are definitely worth the wait. Mine took about 14 weeks. Based on the delays, they threw the sunroof panel in for FREE. It came packaged well and all of the components were clearly marked and the install was a snap. Super happy with the outcome. Do your homework, have some patience, and understand that it will be a lengthy process!

I love my Gobi rack (stealth, no rise). I despise Gobi the company. In fact, for spite of the company i pealed the Gobi sticker off the wind-deflector-thing, and I just might well fill in the cool "Gobi" cut outs in the rack legs with bondo! Hell if I'll give them free advertising!

I am about to begin my 14th week of waiting via my direct order from Gobi. They have always been responsive to my questions and asks though it may take a bit to get back to me at times.

For me, when I first placed my order I had the "sit back and wait" mentality as well. As I get closer to the estimated time period closing I am getting anxious for sure. Weird how the human brain works.

Either way, looking forward to the rack and the install.

Question - Does Gobi charge you when you place the order or when it ships?

No, they will charge your card when it ships. You can request to be charged immediately though.

Good luck getting a hold of them after you order though.

That's right Gobi won't charge, but Trail Duty will charge immediately unless you request otherwise.

Today is week 16. Ordered from Trail Duty on July 5th. I was told 12 weeks and that Gobi had caught up on the huge group buy back order from last Fall. I told myself I would wait for 16 weeks before trying to contact them. Time to make some phone calls.

I ordered mine from Trail Duty on August 17th. I was told it would be shipping this week. I'm not very optimistic about this estimate. :llama:

I ordered my Gobi in July and had it in September, I talked to Sandra and it went as smooth as it could have been. My order was exactly what I wanted and they went over all the options. I ended up needing the rack early and was able to pay 350.00 to have it rushed and they guaranteed it by the 20th of Sept and ended up getting to me on the 21rst, so they compensated my 1 day delay by giving me struts for my lift gate for free which was really cool. I give Gobi 2 thumbs up and I am so glad that I didn't skimp and get something I really didn't want.

Mine had the sunroof cutout as well. Hmmm. I guess it pays sometimes to call in and talk to someone in person? Sorry for that. I feel guilty now.

Not sure why you’d feel guilty. I called and cancelled my order because I no longer wanted the item.

Just pointing out that it’s the only reason you got yours fast. Had I of not cancecelled you would’ve been waiting months like everyone else. Had nothing to do with calling.. I called when I ordered as well.

I had ordered the same way on aug 14th. But nowhere near on the shipping part. I don’t think I would be getting it before new year though based on other forum members saying it would be close to 20 weeks

I ordered a Baja flat utility rack from the very 1st 5th gen group buy. I can't remember how long it took but I don't recall it being excessive. After 5 years it was pretty dinged up and rusting in spots. I emailed Baja and quickly received an response that they would repowder coat the rack but I would have to pay shipping too and from. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and had a local company powder coat the rack. Local guy was well aware of what it takes to stand up to the #$%#$ salt brine now being used here. I was happy that after 5 years Baja was willing to stand behind the product and fix it. I paid more to do it locally than the shipping would have cost but dang, the new finish is sweet! One year and no marks or dings on it. YMMV

i actually just got off the phone with alex at gobi about an hour ago...she was very nice and helped me decide on a couple of adjustments to my order. i live less than 5 mins from where they are made. i will still be waiting 12-16 weeks though. IMO these are the best looking racks out there and have zero issues waiting for exactly what i want.

I ordered my Gobi through Trail Duty on 06/29, so at 17 weeks now. I got a generic looking email from Gobi last week that said "your order is still in production queue and is set to be released to the freight company within the next few weeks.

Maybe someone read this thread and realized she could lose her job if she didn't shape up?

Got a response from Leslie that my order is scheduled for end of November [emoji846]. Hope that’s true!

Don t count on it, they emailed me saying end of September. Now we're going into Novemeber and I don't have it yet. But I'm "in the queue". However, I knew it would take a long time before I ordered (06/29/17).
