Hey guys. I'm in a bit of a pickle here...I'm looking a purchasing a used 2005 SR5 4wd v6 from a near by used car dealership. The vehicle was a rental and has just over 36k miles (yeah just out of bumper-to-bumper warranty). The vehicle seems in pretty good condition except for needing new tires, in which he's willing to negotiate with, from what I can tell, but i'm no mechanic. Problem is that since it was a rental, it has never seen a Toyota dealership, therefore does not have any TSBs/warranty work/etc. Should this be a concern of mine? I'm tempted to see if they will let me take it to the Toyota dealership to have them inspect it to see if any problems are present at my cost. I've looked at the comprehensive CarFax for it and it's virtually spotless so I'm thinking that will not be an issue, and the 4runner is about 3k less than other comparable 4runners of the same year. Thanks in advance for any input!

Ask if you can take it to the dealer, they should say yes. I've never heard of anyone buying a used car that wasn't allowed to take it to a personal mechanic. If they tell you no you can't take it to be inspected that would shoot off a red flag and tell me they know something you don't.

I believe that Toyota has a certified used car inspection that you can pay for, this would probably be a good inspection...maybe talk nicely to the business manager and see if he'll sell you a used ECP on it if it passes or gets fixed to its standards (that's if you are looking for a warranty).
Found mine at a dealership and they did the used ECP inspection as part of my deal and sold me a New ECP without the surcharge (my 4R was still under the comp warranty)

The dealer is asking 22900 for it. Like I said earlier the tires need replacing and he's willing to take that amount off. I'm currently looking at getting the Destination A/T's for it since the local Firestone dealer is having a buy 3 get 1 free sale now through the end of the month.
In the meantime, I've contacted a local Toyota dealership in which they have a purchase inspection service for $84, and the dealership I'm looking at is willing for me to take for the inspection so I think that's a plus. I'll be doing this tomorrow, fingers crossed.

I'm no expert.....
.....but if you do a little research you'll discover that purchasing a used rental vehicle (in this case a 4runner) is a sound purchase, not to mention easy on the wallet (compared to a new vehicle purchase). Ever rent a car? What's the first thing they usually do when you return it? Inspection.....I had found one and should have got it....better than paying full price....

There are guys selling 6 or 7year/ 100k OEM Toyota Platinum warranties on this board and Tundra Solutions for around $750. The only catch is that your vehicle must be less than 3 years old and have less than 36k. This may be something to keep in mind when purchasing your vehicle.
