Exploding Sunroofs!

I think people without sunroofs just jealous. Even the TRD pro folks.

Nope....Never have liked them. I think the only car I have owned with one was the 98 BMW M3 sedan. Never used it. I have owned quit a few performance cars and all but the M3 didn't have one. Not good for rigidity..... Now my wife on the other hand loves sunroofs. She can't buy a car without one.

Searched to find a TRD /P without sunroof. Very happy with it. Friends have a 5th generation that had a sunroof shatter. It broke while parked during the day. Best guess was previous road debris plus hot sun.

Just wanted to say this happened to me in my 2004 4th gen over the weekend while driving down a country road. Gave me a big shock because I wasn't sure what happened and the headliner was closed. When I realized the car was still handling finr I pulled over and looked all around the truck, finally checking the roof and saw what had happened.

I've had a sunroof in many cars and I've never had any issues with breakage or leaks. I love having a sunroof and with the rear window down it's awesome. You can keep the Pro just for that reason, pay more for less, makes sense.

I hate sunroofs. This is now another reason why my next truck will not have a moonroof.

Life is too short to worry about non issues, if your not 6’-4” or taller the sun roof is fantastic! And I’m not worried about it leaking either or my KDSS maintenance, if your worried about those things drive a VW bug. If you own it, maintain it. There are a ton of other way more complicated systems on even the SR5 units. My $.02

I'm 6', and the lack of headroom bugs me when I wear a hat, which is all the time. I also have my seat as high as it will go, because I feel cramped when it's down at all. I also run with seatback all the way up, because it's easier on my hips. But I love the sunroof, and just deal with it. And I love the KDSS
But Toyota needs to increase headroom and legroom...

Remember, the issue of 'structural integrity' didn't matter when the Trail Premium was the top of the line for off roading.

I’m addicted to the moonroof + rear glass both being open. I had an opportunity to order a TRD Pro for under dealer invoice last month through my work program and I decided not to because I didn’t want to give up my moonroof and KDSS. That new blue is so damn nice, though.

Same here. If the PRO was available with a sunroof, a cavalry blue would be sitting in my garage. The airflow with the moonroof and rear glass open while being able to keep the side windows up on the highway is too nice to do without. Magnetic grey TRD off road premium is in my garage instead.

This JUST happened to me today. Was driving to the office, and it sounded like a bomb went off in the vehicle, and i was covered in glass.

Somewhere in the glass that fell onto you lies to source of the failure. Looking at the pictures you shared, I can see the fracture pattern moving away from that central area.

Chances are quite good that this is due to a Nickel Sulfide inclusion in the glass. This is caused by contaminants (like stainless steel) entering the glass melting furnace and embedding in the glass as it begins forming. Once the glass is formed, it has permanent stresses that are overcome only by re-heating through the tempering process which changes the stresses.

I know GM is extremely sensitive to this and has burned my company several times on failures in the field.

Jason, thank you so much again for this! This is really some good information. I went to the dealer this morning, and they attempted to say that a stone must have hit the sunroof... I challenged them, and have now involved Toyota. Will keep you posted

Happened to me and the wife on a test drive of a Mazda CX-5. Just cruising down the freeway, nobody else around and BOOM! Sales guy in the back took the brunt of it, luckily we all had glasses. All the dealer did was say sorry and pulled it around back.

Yep, same thing happened to my wife's 2018 Honda Odyssey several weeks ago. No cars nearby and she didn't see any rocks. I had her bring it back to the house immediately, and it looked like the sunroof exploded outward because the edges of the hole in the center were pushed up. Honda covered under warranty with no issue.

It's pretty surprising to me because this is usually an issue in colder months. Again that's a pure generalization, but most of our claims pop up in the winter.

The 4th gens were known to have the rear hatch window blow out in a similar fashion. From my reading the culprit was primarily the rear defrost… over time one of the two electrical connections failed causing the glass to heat unevenly or something like that.

A good reason to tint/film on the sunroof if you ask me. All the glass stays contained in the tint/film.

^^^This... You beat me to it... This on every window... You may experience a break, but the aftermath will be mitigated to some degree.

Anything come of this? Mine exploded on my '16 SR5 - I have front and rear facing cameras that caught it all - the dealership didn't do anything and then covid happened - haven't had a chance to fight them yet (it has since been repaired via insurance)

Forgot I had a video already on YouTube - the dash cam has a weird codec and the sound I wasn't able to convert properly yet - but yes - it sounded like a gunshot.
