Bravo to anyone taking this on and I more than relate to your desire to increase range and fill that space with something useful.
I spent a LOT of time thinking about this and researching. Part of the problem is that when we all look up into the spare area we think "wow look at all that room" and it's natural considering the limited range of our vehicles stock fuel setup to see the obvious opportunity.
But, looks can be deceiving and as soon as you start looking at it cost, lost clearance, lack of good mounting solutions and other complexities start to get in the way. Not impossible but you have to weigh what you want to take on or pay someone to take on.
So for me, I ultimately used it as more justification for my rear swing out with CBI dual can holder. Get an EZ-siphon and the cans never even have to come off.

Agreed. I'm making my own tank back there and reusing the existing Toyota pump/electrical, etc. But....I only need factory capacity of around 18.5 gallons. Even still, by the time I get a tubular sub frame under the tank that serves not only to keep rocks out of it, but to help stiffen the whole rear end of the vehicle from impacts with another vehicle should I be rear ended (no one wants a Pinto or Crown Vic on their hands) I've eaten up 9.25" of space in the Z axis....which from the bottom of the rear cargo floor to the bottom of the frame rail is about 6"...maybe 7" in a few spots....meaning you have a tank hanging down about 3" below the frame rail....and that's *with* stock capacity.
I don't have much choice either though. I'm doing a XX 4link in the rear so the factory tank has to come out. Besides, it's a belly dragger anyway.
Point is: Co4Fun is right....there's not as much space as you think....unless you're willing to carve a hole in the floor and raise the tank through it and then re-plate in the floor again. I thought about that, but didn't want to give up the relatively flat deck in case I wanted to haul something.
