Extended Roof Rail - Thoughts?

I'm thinking about adding another roof rail with rivnuts. I got some OEM rails and cut them down.

I'm not looking to carry a lot of weight up front, maybe most will be 1/3 of a kayak. The load in compression is fine, I am more thinking the issue will be the pulling out the rivnuts due to aero load or bouncing stuff. I wanted a continuous rail, but the existing ones are a bit too far in towards the cars centerline and would interfere with the sun roof so made a short one.

Thoughts?

I think I'm just going to use rivnuts and some 3m auto adhesive tape....

I just finished my full length roof rack (98"x50") so i can carry drywall or plywood or whatever i want. Made 6 legs and bolted it through the roof right inside the body line on the outside edge of the roof.

How did you bolt through the roof in the front?

Also- is the front made of a bed frame...?

I gutted the interior to clean everything (was my neighbor's farm truck for the last few years) so i was able to pick the exact spots i wanted to drill and run the bolts. I used a thick cap tape under the leg to add to the seal, used stainless steel bolts and nuts, next im going to coat the bolts with bedliner also to add to the seal.

Good eye lol yes, the lower sides are from an old bed frame...also the extra holes give me bungee strap hook points lol

I had similar fears with a recent roof rack build. Added a fairing and it puts most of the wind right over the top of all but the tallest loads.

I've been wanting to do this myself. This is a guy I met on a 4runner facebook group a long while ago... Pretty sure it would still work for with a sunroof.

Not sure this is the way you want to go but perhaps it will give you some ideas.
I talked with the guys at FrontRunner about this awhile back and they can do a full length setup for third gens but don't advertise it.

Finally finished mine! I ran expanded steel on the floor of mine from the back up over the front of the sunroof so if i happen to be loading or carrying anything nothing csn fall strait into the cab.

Exactly what I wanted to do. Sunroof gets a bit in the way, so doing another short rail up front.
