Extended Warranties

Hey everyone, about to buy a new 4Runner - really stoked. Been hammering the internet sales guys at 3-4 dealerships. In no hurry so they're gonna have to break their backs and come way back off invoice to make a deal w/ me.

I'm interested in an extended warranty through a 3rd party vendor, its a rip through the dealer and I've heard you can get great deals through other companies. I just wanted to see if anyone has had great experience with anyone specific or if there's any online resources you know of to research these?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks in advance!

Go with the Toyota one. It is pretty damn comprehensive and they have all sorts of different types (platinum, gold, powertrain) and durations (5, 6, 7, 8, 10 yr, 60k, 75k, 100k, 125k, etc). If you search around, you can find great deals on them.

Thanks alot guys! This is a really awesome forum - glad I joined and looking forward to becoming a first time T4R owner :) I've admired these trucks since I was a kid...getting so pumped to own one!

Don't bother buying a extended warranty. Its just flushing money down the toilet. My best friend is a sales manager at a high volume toyota store and he told me its basically like buying air. If your truck is going to have issues its going to be covered under the factory powertrain warranty. These trucks rarely have issues.

IMO, it depends if you intend on keeping it after the factory warranty runs out. If so, consider the computers that are on these trucks were to go out it would cost you far more than the extended warranty cost. This generation is to new to be able to make a statement that they rarely have issues. Although I hope that turns out to be true.

I have the Toyota gold extended warranty. They refused to cover my X-REAS shocks which were leaking at all 4 after 60k miles. The stealership quoted $2,400 for the replacement. But, they did cover my passenger window motor. Quote on that was only $275...

Bought a new 11 T4R last Saturday. It is an awesome vehicle and I love driving it. I normally shy away from any extended warranty, whether it be for a tv, computer, car, etc. I have full faith my 4R will give me many years of faithful service, but the dealer did persuade me to buy a 7 year/75k warranty through Toyota. But, the only reason I bought it was because it is fully refundable. I think this is a Toyota thing, and not just a special through my dealer. It cost $1475 and after that 7th year, if I have not made a claim against it, I get my $1475 back. If they are still running that, you may want to consider it. It made my monthly payment go up about $13 a month.

If this is true, you got a great deal.

However, I think maybe they lied to you. I was told something similar when purchasing my extended warranty BUT after asking questions I found out that after time goes by, the amount you get back is pro-rated AND you can only cancel it while you are covered under the 3yr/36k warranty if you want the refund. So if you wait until the last day to ask for your money back, you will essentially get pennies, nothing.

I am purchasing a 11 TE today. The dealer called and offered a Extended Warranty 8yr 125K Mi for 2400$ and a rate reduction on my loan through toyota from 3.65 to 3.25%. If I take the deal and then cancel the Warranty later down the road, does anyone know if I will keep the rate reduction? How hard is it to cancel the warranty. I want the warranty but would want it at the same deal as I see on here. Any suggestions or knowledge is appreciated

My advice would be to NOT pay the high price for the warranty, but instead hold out for either the prices that you see quoted by Jerry @ Midwest (in the other warranty threads), or just buy it from Jerry directly. You can get the warranty for around $1300 (or at least that was the price in Nov '10).

Shop around for loan rates...they change so often that I couldn't tell you what's good now.

The rate decrease of .4 isn't worth paying $1100 more for a warranty than you'd pay elsewhere.
