Extended warranty question

Picked up a new 4runner yesterday and the dealer tried to sell me a 7year 100k warranty for 1600... Not a good deal and I plan to pursue some of the recommendations that are on this forum. It looks like better deals can be had.

My question was when I asked the dealer if the warranty being offered was a "toyota" warranty they said no. That it was through some other company.

Are the genuine toyota extended warranties through toyota or some other affiliate?

You can get a better warranty for a better price through Toyota. If you search around, there is a dealer in Missouri (I think) that is offering the same warranty for closer to $1000 through Toyota.

Now that is for 2WD, but I'd expect the 4WD be very, very similar.

remember you can purchase an extended warranty any time within the factory 3 yr./36k mile warranty period; gives you a little time.

Has anyone actually needed an extended warranty with for their toyota? I purchased a 2000 SR5 with 7 miles on it... I sold it roughly 2 weeks ago with 250K miles behind it (and probably 250K miles in front of it).

Aside from normal wear/tear items (i.e.- brake pads, rotors, etc), the only items that failed that would have been covered by warranty were:

Radiator - 215K Miles
Exhaust - 240K Miles

I am not aware of too many extended warranties that would extend that long?

Besides... had I set $0.01 aside for every mile driven... I would have saved $2400 which easily covered the repair costs of any "out of warranty" repair.

It just doesn't seem worth it.

I purchased the warranty through my dealership of delivery, it was 1400, which I knew was a bit higher than what I'd seen here. I liked the sales/money guys and figured that an extra 200 for an 8year/125,000mi warranty wasn't bad from my local guys.

As for not being worth it... Yeah it's a Toyota and my 88truck is still running solid - never needed more than a radiator swap - tangent over - but the warranty is peice of mind and a decent discount for my insurance.

There are a lot on components in the 5th gen trails that if they were to go out would cost you a lot more that an extended warranty. I put my trucks through a lot of offroad use be it at the beach or at the ranch. I purchased my extended warranty for 8 yrs 125k for 1,399. from Jerry Johnson. I do keep my Toyota's for a long time so for me it was a no brainer.

Thanks for the info. I was glad I didn't bite at the offer while we were finalizing the deal. I knew you could buy it at any time before the factory warranty ran up so I thought I woudl do my homework before buying.

The 8year 100k warranty looks like the ticket for me. After 2k in repairs on my BMW at 50k miles in the last year I want the piece of mind... Everything on cars these days are more complex (more likely to break) and more expensive when they do break.

So is the warranty offered by toyota dealers actually backed by toyota or someone eles?

Dealers sell both Toyota extended warranties and "third party" extended warranties backed by some other company. Some sell both or just one or the other. Just ask the dealer and they should tell you what they sell. The Toyota extended warranty is probably the "safer" of the two although I've had some of the third party warranties and they have been fine too.
