Recently purchased a 2004 Sport 4Runner w/V8. It had 69,250 on it and we've already got it up to 71,2xx. It had a 3 month/3000 mile warranty on the powertrain for being a used car from the lot we got it at but that was it other than the factory emissions warranty.

We are being offered a 3 year/36,000 mile powertrain warranty (including 4WD system/transfer case) at about $1300 through our dealership with a company called Zurich. I have no idea if the price is good or not but it sounds awfully steep and at the rate we are putting mileage on the thing I think it would only be a 2/2.5 year warranty for us.

Any thoughts on whether or not I should get the warranty? I'm leaning fairly far no at this point since the thing runs so well and so far I've read only good things about the V8. Opinions are quite appreciated!

Too be honest, I bought the T4R because of the reliablity record. I did not purchase an extended warranty, and hope that my savings will be on the positive side of the whole-picture as plan on driving the thing until it will not drive another mile.

Now, that said, with the mileage you are reporting, I would be interested in the terms of the warranty.

If there is no deductable, and will cover every part of the drivetrain and accessories, then it might be worth the $1,300.00. Otherwise, I vote NO.

Good Luck

Thanks for the replies and votes. I am with you guys in that I bought this thing because it shouldn't have issues so buying the ext warranty would be fairly counter productive. The 1300 would be drivetrain which they were including engine, transfer case, transmission, and drive axle. To cover everything was like 2200 or something of the sort. I ended up telling our sales guy we were goign to pass on it.

I voted "no" because this is a third party product, which I would never buy, having been stung once.

If this were a Toyota product, I'd switch to "maybe, it's your call".

FWIW, I bought the Toyota EW on my SR5, but more because I was able to get a terrific price from advice on this forum.

I can understand that. I will say, however, I looked up Zurich quite a bit and they seem like a real solid company. I found people on a BMW forum saying about good experiences with them etc.

I didn't buy it from a Toyota lot so I didn't get to talk to Toyota about it but maybe I should? Hmm...
