Exterior mods and input

So Im bout to get my first 4Runner for my wife to drive. I cant just let it be stock...it drives me nuts seeing someone driving same thing as I do


Heres what Im thinking and please correct me if Im wrong and give opinions (except haters on rims )

1) Want clear headlights with deflector in them. What year was first for these OEM? '99? Also any luck with aftermarket brands?

2) 22" rims with a 265/40/16 tire which is about .3" bigger so it shouldnt throw off speedo much. Im also guessing these are not going to be much heavier than say running a 35" tire. Ive read the threads here so Im aware of the saftey and what not. I'll assume all risks. I just need to know what offset to get and back spacing? I want it to be at same offset as stock as far as it sticks out. Hate seeing rims sit in fenderwells alot.

3) Will a 200 front bumper (all painted kind) fit this w/o major modification?


I also had a few general questions. Are these prone for timing belts and water pumps failing at a certain range of mileage? How hard to do yourself? Also are front wheel bearing/hubs prone to going out? Best shocks for a SMOOOOTH ride?

I'm guessing you meant to put 265/40/22, because 265/40/16 won't fit. Does 22" rim and smooth ride belong in the same sentence.

'99 was when the clear headlights first showed up.

Did you mean 2000 front bumper?

The "16" in 265/40/16 is rim size so you'll have a good 'ol time trying to get those tires on 22" rims. Not sure why you are comparing these to a 35" tires 265/40/16s are like 24.5" tires. I'm not understanding this?????

Stock rim backspacing is about 4.5". 265/70/16 (30") or 265/75/16s (31") will both fit w/o rubbing with this backspacing.

We don't know what you're trying to fit a 200 (I'm guessing you mean '00) on to... in other words, what year is the 4runner you're trying to fit it on to? It will fit any 3rd gen w/o major modification.

Timing belt and water pump service interval is 60K for '96s and 90K after that. The 3.4L (I'm assuming that's what you're asking about) is a non-interference engine and cannot bend or damage valves if the timing belt breaks. Neither the TB or WP is particularly prone to failure. For me it's not hard to change myself, for you I have no idea.

My wheel bearings and hubs are still great at 195K.

OME and Bilstein make great shocks. Tokicos are what Toyota used for stock shocks (at least on my truck).

I'm curious why you don't just try to find a 2000 or higher with the bumper and headlights you want already installed? Also, thise 22's are going to ride rough, nothing much you can do about it...

Yea Im sorry guys I meant tire size R22 not 16 and also a 2000 front bumper. Guess I got ahead of myself typing. I dont get a 2000 because Im buying this from my Dad for my wife. We're getting rid of her vehicle now. 4Runner is a 1997 Limited silver color. Has ~ 14x,xxx miles and 1 owner.

Good news on the non interference motor. I guess Ill ask that question if the time comes.

So if I find headlights aftermarket for a 1999+ (within body style range) they will just bolt in? Also bumper too?

So when I look for rims I need a 4.5" BS correct? Anything else with offset or anything?

The 99+ bumper will bolt right on, but just paint her current front and rear bumpers to match the paint job, the 97 bumper looks great color keyed too, you would also save money doin that cause now you dont have to buy a new
bumper.
It's trd 4runnin's truck, i love the way it looks, IMO it looks better than the 99+ color keyed.

I do like that. I got the two tone and have yet to figure out what I want the bottom to be since its front and all. Have to actually look at it to get the idea. Did he sand blast all the chrome off first I would imagine? I kind like the chrome with a light color. Wasnt sure of this until I did my HD and its looks great IMO so I may just leave the chrome and paint grill shell and valance. Whos got 22's on here?

Ask trd 4runnin what he did, but i suggest you paint the chrome too, it will look better than if you dont.

I have 22s on my Suburban. They look great and ride great because I have a tall tire with a decent sidewall. I am not really feeling them on a 4Runner, but to each his own.

Also wheres a good place to get a billet grille and LED tail lights? I saw some of your rides and am digging those tail lights but havent found any yet. Would like to get the lower billet grille also but again havent found it. I would have to modify it which is no biggie for the fog lamps buts thats easy enough.

They will bolt right up. Check eBay for LED tails, thats where I got mine.

just my opinion on rims and SUV's... i think a 22 looks too big on a 4runner because its just not that big of an SUV. they look okay on a tahoe or suburban because those are just bigger vehicles. i think 3rd gen 4runners and too rugged looking to put big rims on, in my opinion it'd be like putting big rims on a bronco or something. but if you want to do it go for it, i'm not gonna hate on anyone. just pick the right rims (one's that look similar to move120... his ride is pretty slick). also i think like some good 18's would look really good, they would look big, but not over the top you know?
