Exterior paint job?

Just curious, has anybody painted the exterior of their 5th gen a color not offered by Toyota, or did Toyota do any special editions? I always thought the Toyota color options were somewhat limited...

I really doubt you are going to see people with newer vehicles paint them a different color unless they've got money to blow and that will be far and inbetween.

totally agreed, the cost of a complete paint job as good/better than factory would be stupid expensive and very time consuming. I doubt we will see this anytime soon

Obviously! That is the reason I put the question on here, because it is an unlikely thing.
 
...and to clog up the airwaves with total nonsense! But hey look at the television. There are shops repainting all kinds of brand new vehicles!
 
I really like the sandstorm color on the FJ Cruisers Trail Teams and also the Army Green. IMO the Trail Edition with the black fenders would probably look really cool in the Sandstorm. If the price was right I'd get mine changed. But then after I spent $$$ on a new paint job I'd probably baby it off road. Pros and Cons I guess. :confused:

Wrap it!
I didn't paint it but I vinyl wrapped my hood with 3M Matte Black 180c a couple of weeks ago. You can wrap it in any color or combo you want. My hood was getting nicked up in the front anyways. It's removable down the road if you get tired of it or want to sell the truck.

It's actually a joy to drive it now without the glare from the winter sun and oncoming headlights. Another added bonus is it doesn't vibrate anymore,,like when going 60+mph into the wind!

Wrapping is pretty cool deal, but it's not super cheap. I think it's near the $2g mark for a good wrap, but the benefit is, you can take it off whenever you want.

I went to a couple of local places that specialize in wraps and they wanted $400+ for the hood in the 3M black Matte. Did my research and bought it online for $125 shipped for a 60x60 piece for the same 3M vinyl.

Took it back to the shop to have them put it on and the guy said he'd apply it for $150. I said I'll shop it around and went to walk away and he said he'd do it for $100.I said fine if you let me watch and help as I want to learn how to do it .He got all uppity and said he wouldn't teach anybody or let anybody watch and the hood had some tricky places and it would take a experienced pro.

I told him I might be back. In the mean time I bought a heat gun and had some 3m carbon vinyl I was playing around with for the interior and learned how to do it myself . With the help of forums and youtube videos too,of course.

It turns out this stuff is so easy and forgiving to work with once you get the hang of it. Seriously about a 30 minute learning curve with these new vinyls that use heat instead of the water method. Plus they have air channels so it doesn't bubble near as much as the old vinyls.Took me less then an hour to do the hood after some practice with the smaller interior parts.I'm going to wrap the top with Urban Night Digital Camo or plain urban camo vinyl before I put my full utility Bajarack on next month or so.Sent for a sample of each. It's ~$140 for the Avery 9 year camouflage vinyl for the whole top.Paid $125 for the hood for 3M.

Very impressive Harper. I think you should go to work for Toyota and design the Trail Edition. You look like you are ready for Baja!

Can you take a pic with the hood up?
