I believe there are clips on the inside of the trim.
jharris2, you are absolutely correct about the clips.
Late last summer I had my rear door open and caught it on a dumpster (very DUMB on my part).
Anyway the lower trim was pried off at the rear corner due to my stupidity and some of the clips got broken.
I was able to push the trim and clips back in and that held the trim on for the trip home.
MI4Runner, First I would try to simply push on the area around the clips to pop them back in.
In my case, that was all it took to get my unbroken clips to hold the trim on.
If you actually have broken clips your Toyota dealer can get you replacements.
Be advised that different areas of the trim pieces can and do use DIFFERENT CLIPS.
I purchased a few of each of the different clips when I replaced my broken ones.
Had I not done that I would not have had the correct clip for the job.
Bottom line, try pushing (gently) on the trim that is popped out first. If that does not work look into new clips.
If your 4Runner is still under warranty and you did not do a bonehead thing like I did, have the dealer deal with this issue for you.
