I've got a '00 Limited 3.4, recently it suddenly started running very poorly. It starts up okay and runs smoothly at idle but once it's in gear anything over very slightly giving it the gas causes it to lose power badly. On top of that, the power pulses noticeably with about 5 second intervals. It's especially bad when it's cold. Even when it's in neutral and you give it the gas it hesitates severely. On hills of any kind you have to push way down on the gas which causes it to downshift into 3rd or it slows to a stop. It's like you're shutting the gas off. I had the codes ran and it said it was the oxygen sensor. Can these fail suddenly and cause such poor running?

Unlikely to be the sensor causing that. They do fail suddenly but usually dont effect much other than emissions and fuel economy. Codes can be produced by multiple things, the sensors being the most common, but not the only one.
