F**K!!! It happened to me.

I thought the ATF are pressurized so when the radiator does fail, the coolant wouldn't get in the tranny... or maybe I'm wrong

Anyway I put in a separate tranny cooler 1 month after I bought the truck.

Unfortunately, you're wrong. I wish you were right.

I got it all done. Cooling system flushed and new radiator on.

Tranny flushed (about 8 gallons), pan dropped and cleaned, new filter on, and new fluid in.

I drove it around tonight about 15 miles. Shifts into R and D without a jerk. Shifts smoothly while driving around at normal driving conditions (no hard acceleration.) I didn't want to step on the gas and see how it shifts under hard acceleration.

I'm definitely crossing my fingers and will be for awhile. I plan on draining the radiator again and changing the tranny filter again. Is there anything wrong w/ using a molded rubber gasket permanently as opposed to FIPG? That shit is a PITA.

As mentioned in a few other threads, this T4R is my first vehicle with an automatic transmission. If the tranny does start to crap out, what signs should I be looking for?

Rubber or cork gasket is recommended for trans pan. They work just fine, and make removal of pan a sinch.

Signs of bad tranny? Not shifting, slipping out of gear unexpectedly, noise, etc.

The tranny will slip.

Glad you got everything done, hope my directions made a shiity job it at least a little easier for you. It's ok to use the rubber molded gasket, but I highly recommend not using cork unless you like laying under the tranny with ATF dripping in your eyes and mouth. The corks leak 1/2 the time and you'll end up probably having to drop the pan and seal it again.

I wouldn't have been able to do it without your help.

Thanks x1000

ETA-I ended up not pulling the freeze plugs. I just pulled the thermostat, stuck a hose in the top engine port (where the upper hose connects to) and flushed it out until no more pink milkshake came out of the bottom port (where the lower hose connects to.) (I'm not sure which is the intake and which is the return.)

My tranny started to make a whirring noise under my console where my torque converter is located, and then it went completely out. Keep an eye on it for sure. GL!!

Will do...I picked up AAA today just in case I need to get towed.

What happened once your torque converter went?

About 3 hours ago, I just had my B&M tranny cooler installed,,reading about the milkshake issues gave me the chills.

I read from the many other pink milkshake threads that hard shifting is one of the warning signs.

My car was shifting hard, (delayed shift and a jerk when it finally would shift) the day before it milkshaked. It was when I parked after arriving home from work that I noticed that I had straight tranny fluid in my radiator overflow reservoir.

My question is: does the hard shifting mean that there was a milkshake in my tranny already?

smart move

good pre-emptive strike-way to go.

Everyone-tell every auto tranny Runner guy or gal you know.

Either do the radiator replacement or do a tranny cooler or do both- but do something before it fails on you. It's going to help your resale value if you ever do sell your 3rd gen.

We did radiator replacement on Sunday 27th for my friends 01 Limited. Absolutely simple job-the grille removal was the single hardest part, and that just took extra hands.

domstriker good luck with yours sir.

thank you sir.

I've got a B&M cooler, in-line filter kit, and a scanguage II on the way. I wish I would have gotten to it before the milkshake. Hindsight is always 20/20. You're right in spreading the word about changing out the radiator or a separate cooler preemptively. A small job now will prevent a huge job later and will spare your tranny.
