Fact Backup Camera on an aftermarket unit?

I ahve the factory Nav with backup camera. I am looking at replacing it with an aftermarket unit (Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer or Eclipse) to get better sound quality, ipod hookup, XM hookup etc. Can I hook up the factor backup camera to an aftermarket unit?

To be honest probabaly not worth the time...But I am sure there is someone out there that has done this or who has the pin out diagram for the OEM camera.

This is something I would consider going after. Has anyone done this?

No why would this not be worth the time the camera is mounted, works great, the install is a cleaner than you would ever get an aftermarket installation to work.........seems like a much better solution for me, since I already have it in place and working from the factory, to leverage it vs. ripping it out to put in an aftermarket camera.

most aftermarket head units just take a single rca video cable for backup camera...

the wires for the camera should consist of power, ground, possibly an acc wire, and a postive and negative for the video.

It would be a good solution for you...But it would depend on a few things. nserpa9248 is right. Aftermarket head units have set inputs. It would be a matter of getting the wire designations for the OEM camera and getting them to interface with the aftermarket head unit. That is why I asked if anyone has done this.

There are times that integrating OEM parts can be challenging. I would definitely like to see this happen. I do not think we can get OEM Nav in TX. I have never even seen the OEM camera. Could you be so kind as to post a pic? If I could add it to my ride I would and even consider doing the research to see what it takes to integrate. I have an Alpine IVA-W200 and would love to see if it could work

I'm not positive, but I think the factory camera from 2004-2005 is a direct plug for the Eclipse AVN series. Many people who bought an OEM NAV system have used the Eclipse camera and have reported that it plugs right in (which also plugs right into the Eclipse units). So by that logic, the factory camera should fit the Eclipse units.

I will post a pic of the camera today. I was gone on a road trip all weekend, sorry for a slow response. I love the Eclipse and the Alpine for sound quality. I have heard the Alpine is the best Ipod interface, period (can anyone confirm this?). That all said the Kenwood has a good Ipod interface from the looks of it, and uses the GARMIN Nav. After traveling all weekend using my factory Nav and my Garmin Nav on my bicycle......I realize a quality Nav is critical and GARMIN is the best. So I am considering the Kenwood too. Alternative 2 is scrap the Nav on the headunit and get a separate Nav just for the truck and leave the head unit for Ipod & DVD & Music.

it is true if you get the eclipse model then it is plug and play with your existing camera. The camera doesn't have many wires coming out of it (maybe just 2) so it wouldn't be too hard to just use a multi meter and figure out what is what, and splice some RCA ends on the wires.

Which plug from the factory harness goes into the Eclipse unit to give you the backup camera. I am sure it is not the main plug. Can someone tell me, or show me?

just curious, i have a factory back up installed but obviously it wont plug into the back of my avic d3, does anybody have the wiring diagram that i can tap into the factory camera, add power to it and convert the + and - for the camera onto a RCA jack...??

Your OEM mounted camera is probably the BEST option you can use for a rear view camera, considering it's flush mounted and basically hidden.

ANY aftermarket camera you get will mount out in the open somehow, like mount to the license plate, or under the bumper or spoiler. This leaves the camera open to vandalism, and theft.

I have installed an OEM camera, however it was after the fact. Mine wasn't installed from the factory. I did install it in the factory position. One thing you should know is that the camera is intended to run on 6vDC, supplied from the nav radio. However, I've had mine running on the full 13.8vDC for the last several years with no problems. Oh, and I don't have mine powered just when I put it in reverse, mine's powered all the time the vehicle is on so I can select the camera to view whenever I want.

I have used it with OEM nav units E7006, E7007, E7008, and aftermarket units Kenwood DDX-8019, Alpine IVA-W505, and Kenwood DNX-9960 with great results. The only other camera I would even consider is the Kenwood CMOS-300, but I would only use that for a front-view camera to be used in conjunction with the rear view camera. :guitar3:

Duc... you might have done this already but download the owner manuals for the head units you're interested in. They should diagram how backup cameras are hooked up so you can see whether the factory would work or not and what type of interface each head unit has. My guess is it shouldn't be an issue.

As for Alpine being the best iPod interface, that might be the case. I haven't used Alpine in that application. I have a Pioneer Z120BT that interfaces well with my iPhone and iPod. It gives you the option to control from the h/u or the iPod. It displays alblum art and sorts everything you need by artist, playlist, songs, etc. Will display any media you're iPod has on it. The iPhone interface is even sleeker if you have that. It will stream my Slingbox, Netflix and Pandora apps straight from my phone without the having to jailbreak.
