Factory 4 Pin Towing Connector Wiring

Hi guys & girls, I have a question once again. Last week I was pulled over for my trailer lights not working properly. So I followed my factory 4 pin connector under the hitch and found a black box tucked away behind my left interior panel.

<a href="http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/ryankmasuda/Toyota%204Runner%20Build/?action=view&current=IMAG0278.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/ryankmasuda/Toyota%204Runner%20Build/IMAG0278.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This is one side of the black box with wires coming out.

This is the other side

According to a Toyota tow wiring diagram:

Green with yellow stripe = Right turn signal/Right Brake
Green with Black stripe = Left turn signal/left brake
Green with red or white stripe = Tail Lights

According to my after market 4 pin connector:

Green wire = right signal
Yellow wire = left signal
Brown wire = tail light vehicle wiring

My question is what is the black box? Is this not working and is this why my trailer lights quit working? Can I check to see if the black box is bad? Can I directly connect the wires from the factory wiring to the after market connector and bypass the black box?

Thanks for any help

Do you not have the factory setup? My taillight converter (the little black box) was made by Reese, not Toyota.

I had a short on my trailer that fried mine so I got the kit from Amazon that moved the converter from behind the left rear panel to behind the right one. I think the kit was $~30 and was relatively a simple plug and play except for splicing two wires.

My black box says "Toyota" on it and the connectors that plug into the box have "Toyota" labels so I'm guessing it's from Toyota. However it looks hacked together so it may have been installed by the previous owner.

In the second picture it shows a green w/ yellow, green w/ black, green w/ white and solid green wire. What would the solid green wire be?

I had the same problem with mine a while back and 2 years later the little black box had a short in it and started melting away and almost caused a fire. It says its a 15 amp converter or something. I would think you would be able to bypass that box but Idk.. Idk what that box does. but if your blinkers start coming on (not blinking but solid)when you hit the brake ,check that box again for any melting.
