Factory Alarm for a 2002 : Questions...

Okay.
bought a 2002 4runner sport from a non-toyota dealer.
said it had factory installed keyless entry AND alarm. only had keyless. they agreed to install a factory alarm, but two things.
one, the alarm does NOT engage when i unlock and open the door with a key. (my 1998 alarm does sound if armed and doors are unlocked w/ the key) did the alarm function change? or is this a way it is programmed?
and two: the remotes look like the same keyless entry remotes. only difference i now see is there is a dash mounted red light now, but how do i confirm that they actually gave me a factory alarm?
i have not taken delivery yet because of other issue, but want to know if they are messing w/ me. basically i would love to read up on the function of the alarm and see what the remotes *should* look like!

thanks SO Much in advance.
this board is really wonderful.

my 01's alarm doesnt sound when unlocked with the key as you describe.

also, you can test it by hitting the panic button.

my 02's alarm will also disarm (with no sound) when the key is used.
as for the remotes, i think the 99-02's are the same 4 button ones - lock, unlock, window down, and panic...ebay might have some pics

I think it depends which alarm model you have. My alarm does disengage with the key, which is good if the battery in the remote dies suddenly, plus I only got one and haven't bought a second. Mine does not have the window option, it has two buttons on front to lock and unlock and a panic on the back. They should have a speaker to chirp when they engage and disengage but the panic should trigger the horn only, I would prefer a multi-sound siren myself. Plus you should have a pressure sensor somewhere, I didn't think mine did but chipping ice the other day I set off my alarm, must have hit it too hard.

Thanks for the replies!

Awesome...
Thanks so much for the clarification.
Now i just need to find a good brush guard for the center only w/o the headlight protectors. any suggestions would be appreciated! I can not seem to find any that come with just the center guard. hmmm?

Both performance products and smittybuilt have one I think looks good on these trucks. It is a small guard that just covers the bumper lip, it doesn't come over the grill. It looks sharp, offers protection and is a good place for lights. Some of the bigger guards that cover the grill look funny on the post 98 models due to the bulging front bumper, they sit a few inches away from the grill or have a strange curve to them, but that is just my opinion.

Center brush guard..

Thanks 'pat161' for the info about brush guards.
i totally agree with you that some of the brush guards look a bit odd on the post 98 models with the bulge in the bumper.

if anyone has any suggestions of web sites to order (for the best price of course) center brush guards...i would love to find them.
i haven't had much luck yet. and i thought i was good at finding odd things on the web! thanks!

it does sit a little away from the grill, but i dont think it looks weird or out of place.

besides, on a snowy day like it is here today, when you get dumped on with 12 inches of snow, that space is much easier to clear out than if the guard was right up on the grill.
