I mean, it's not normal for tires to go boom... so end of thread? Lol
That being said, I don't know how toasty it has been in Texas lately and I also don't know what your tire pressure was at the time of the incident or if you had been running that tire for a long time at low pressure (I would assume didn't mention a TPMS light, it was at least above 28-29psi). There is also the question of does that tire get curbed a lot? Did you hit a pot hole at some point with the vehicle? Any of those could have compromised the tire's integrity and combined with heat and speed caused it to give out. The picture shows what looks to be a sidewall rupture, so less likely something punctured it unless it caught the sidewall, so I'm leaning on something trauma related to the tire.
Or it could just be a faulty/defective tire that after 3yrs of Texas sun, 85mph carpool trips, and such, just gave up the ghost. There's lots of reasons it could have blown out, some of them more "normal/expected" than others; but as long as you're okay and the 4Runner is okay, I'd chalk it up to unfortunate probability?

Sustained high speeds definitely calls for higher pressures....this lowers sidewall flex which builds heat.
I recall my Mercedes had two pressures specified on the inside of the fuel door. One was for driving above 100mph and the other for below. I always kept mine at the higher number. It was about 10 psi higher if I recall.
Even though 85 is not 100, stands to reason a suv tire builds heat easier than a low pro sport tire.

I had a blow out last year with my '08 Sorento (at night on I-75N just outside of Atlanta doing about 75mph)...could have ended up looking like the OP's tire had I not stop quickly enough. The culprit? Sidewall blowout. The cause? Pretty sure it was the concrete statue near my wife's sisters mailbox. Earlier in the day, I had 'clipped' it with my passenger side rear tire backing out (narrow driveway). You can see on the raised white letter where it hit and where it came apart.

TPMS light did not come on. It had been roughly 80 degrees or below here so far so heat shouldn't be a factor.
Anyways, 32k on Duellers, I'd agree it is unfortunate but I guess time to move on.
The silver lining, I get to have new tires sooner than I'd had otherwise.
