Factory Fog Lamp Relay

Any one out there still running the 98 Runner Limited factory fog light option. My relay (I think it was a Bosch) went out a few weeks ago, rusted and corroded. Replaced it with one from a local stereo shop. With the new one I had to cut a terminal off in the center and was told it would work. It does work but the relay remains warm and the battery dies in four days. I threw the old one away. If someone has this setup I am looking for the model number imprinted on the Bosch relay so that I can purchase the correct one off the net. Before all this I hit up all the local parts stores and no one carried anything that would work.

go to Toyota Parts Zone-key in your VIN number and look it up for your knowledge and then post up the link of the diagram for others that might benefit if you see what I mean.

It doesn't have to be the OE one, I would think almost any part store would have one with the correct pin config.

TPZ only carries the relay for the factory "optional" round fog lights for the SR5 mounted in the bumper. The "accessory" Limited fog lights for the 98 were made by Hella and mounted next the to license plate. They were rectangular. When I had the relay I went to several auto parts stores, Pep Boys, Napa, Kragen and Car Quest and they were unable to provide a relay. The fog light kit has the relay mounted to the fire wall and is not part of the factory relay block as in the SR5. The relay was a 1" square black cube with 4 male pins. I believe it was made Bosch. I do not have the relay any longer and the WEB search is not yielding any results. Any one have a 98 4runner with the rectangular fog lights system?

how about Hella/Bosch fog lights pre-packaged?

Sorry TraumaHawk I failed to pickup on the correct year 98. Let me dig a bit I probably have one laying around from an old set up of mine. I have had driving or fogs for almost every car I have ever owned and hate using relays in general.

I am going to take a guess though that it's probably a standard 4 pin relay by Hella or Bosch and a Car Toys or other shop may also have one laying around.

You may get good results over on Yota Tech (Marketplace) or here in Classifieds as a "WTB-Want to buy" Hella/Bosch 4 pin relay.

I'll scrounge around the garage I probably have this.

Anything like this? The fifth center pin is Normally Closed and can be cut off. Here's the NAPA link. It's probably made by Echlin but the pin format is the classic Bosch. Or you can just get the matching connector also from NAPA and splice it in if it really won't fit.

If these aren't right, go to the search box on NAPA and put in 'fog relay', there are five pages. Never waste time on anything funky with a parts guy you don't know who does not have gray hair. The kids just get a blank stare when the computer can't spit out the answer.

Thanks for all the tech help. I went back to the stereo shop in between threads and talked to the lead tech. The problem disolved down to that I had an overzealous, under educated tech give me the wrong part. The relay given to me had the pins reversed and the power was constantly on. The lead tech rewired a new relay and plug that matched and problem solved.
