I finally decided to throw in an amp and some subs, I read a few posts and used the the12volt diagram... I am fairly mech. inclined and thought this was a pretty easy install, just time consuming because I am anal about things being done right, and neat.
99' 4runner limited 4wd, using factory head unit
My parts list I used
-2 x 12" kicker comp vr's in ported box $90
(got a stupid good deal on these)
-amp install kit (from my previous vehicle) freebie
-Line out converter from best buy $25
-SPL 820wt amp(maybe 125rms) freebie
-Optima Red top batt, know a dealer... $100
I just simply took my time and pulled the dash apart, and un-installed the factory head unit. I spliced into the following
Factory HU ----------------------------------Line out Converter
black(+) left rear spkr-------------------- (+) l side high input(loc)
yellow(-) left rear spkr---------------------(-) l side high input(loc)
red(+) right rear spkr ----------------------(+)r side high input(loc)
white(-)right rear spkr-----------------------(-) r side high input(loc)
grey(+) switched 12v -----------------------(+) remote amp switch(amp)
The rest is pretty much typical amp install, ground, 12v power, rca's... I ran the LOC right behind the lower center dash where the lighter and aux power plugs are. I made a velcro harness for the so i could stick it right on the inside of the dash... pretty much right behind the head unit so that I could easily unattach it and adjust it.
*also notice that you will have an adjustment on the LOC and on the amp for gain
I have some ?'s for you system guys....
I really do not totally like the sound. Either the LOC, or the amp is throwing some mids into the subs... I have never put an amp behind a stock hu and used a loc... is this causing the mids/ trashy sound...?
I personally think it is the shit hole of an amp, its a freebie from a friend, only reason I'm using it... it does have a LPF so it helps but not much. I've adjusted everything down on the hu, and up on the amp, and the filter is maxed out, its as clean as its going to sound with this set up, and not what I want.
I believe the subs are 8ohms, and I ran them in // , and bridged them so they should be at 4ohms now right?
I am def. planning on a good monoblock amp, I believe this would totally change the sound to what I want... I had a memphis class D mono in my previous truck and I really loved it, so I'm thinking another memphis... what do ya'll think?
