Factory Keyless Entry/Alarm Randomness?

I have been noticing some strange random behavior with my factory keyless entry/alarm system. On some occasions when I disarm the alarm, the little 'beep' will only sound once for each time I push the unlock button. Other times, it will beep twice like it does most every time. Other times I have noticed that the headlights will not come on for the 15 seconds or so when I lock and unlock the vehicle. Most of the time the headlights DO come on like they are programmed to do (I wish I could turn it off, really), but I'm trying to figure out why it behaves so randomly.

In addition there have been a couple of occasions where I have pressed the unlock button on the remote, then opened my door right away and the vehicle went into a full alarm state with the horn blaring. What is the deal? Anybody else have these issues?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ricky

I already said above that I have the factory keyless entry system.

I use the factory Toyota keyfob as well, and it has the factory keyless entry LED on the dash with the valet button built into it.

It's all factory; nothing aftermarket.

It sounds like you have an aftermarket alarm installed and it's screwing up the keyless entry.

The thing that makes me think you have an aftermarket alarm is because you say your headlights come on when you lock or unlock the doors. That's not a function that's built into the factory alarm. The factory alarm also doesn't have a valet button or a separate LED, it uses the engine immobilizer light in the center console.

Oh, and congrats on your 100th post.

Your describing a dealer installed alarm I used to have. It lasted 6 weeks before I forced the dealer to take it back for a refund.

I read your post a couple of times before actually deciding to assist, if you want more help you have to stop being so rude and blunt on your posts. This opinion is not just from this threat but many before.

Sorry about that... Some of the other threads I've gotten frustrated with some people not listening (reading) and thinking about what I said; just thought it was happening again here.

At any rate, I'm still wondering how this could be an aftermarket system (and if so, who makes it?). All of the 4Runners I've seen in my area (Gulf States Toyota) have the same system in it with the same LED/pushbutton on the dash near the TRAC button. What problems did you have with yours that caused you to take it back to the dealer? As I mentioned in a previous post, it must be well integrated because it still uses the same factory keyfob to arm/disarm. I surely thought it was the RS3200 alarm that the dealers put into the 4Runners.

That is almost certainly a aftermarket system as others have said.

There is no Valet button or LED like that on my 2005 4Runner or any other I've seen.

As to the problem you're having with it...

It is very possible it is a short in the wiring, caused by metal on wire contact. There is probably a wire touching metal and the metal is "sawing" through the wire and grounding that circuit out.

The symptoms will probably get worse as time goes on. I'd strongly suggest getting the dealer to check all the wiring involved.

The dealer is probably one of the last places I'd go with it at this point (the vehicle has 61k miles on it), so I may have to try to track it down myself... Does anybody in the Gulf States Toyota area know what alarms dealers are installing in these things? I know the dealers around the San Antonio/Austin area seem to be putting in the same alarms as the dealers in the Houston area.

don't know if this helps, but i live in southern california. My alarm system was already installed when i bought the truck new (04 SR5), however i know it's a 3rd party system. Mine is an audiovox and it still uses the OEM keyfob, and the led is near the trac button.
