Factory Nav driving me over the edge.... (ipod connectivity)

Over the two years I have owned my 4runner, I have been trying to find a decent solution to play my ipod/iphone in the car. My old subaru was great because it had a tape deck.

Reading recommendations the VAIS SLI sounded like a winner. I ordered one up and tried to install but the unit was never detected. THey replaced the unit and the connection cables but the result was the same. I gave up and gave the box to my parents.

Next I tried a Peripheral box. Now I'm trying USA Spec. NOne of them work!

What could be going on here? Is the factory nav's ability to detect a changer hosed? Would there be any way to get Toyota to replace it under warranty?

Anyone have any other ideas? I'm almost at the point I want to put in an aftermarket nav, but I really hate to waste that much money.

what version of the USA spec did you use? I know for a fact that my buddies 07 and my wifes 08 highlander both with factory nav work with the pa20-toy

It's the PA15Toy being plugged into a 2005 e7005 Nav system. USASpec seems to indicate this is a "4th gen" nav which won't work with the PA20Toy.

Every indication is that one of these products should work...

I have a 2008 4Runner with the factory Nav and I use the Dice Electronics Toyota iPod interface unit and this combination works very well.

I have a 160 GB iPod and I have the Dice unit set so that the iPod controls itself instead of the Nav unit controlling the iPod. Evidently this is something new with the latest generation of iPods. I could control my previous generation iPod from the audio unit as well as from the iPod.

The nav doesn't display the song information, which is fine with me. The steering wheel controls will control the volume and track navigation. This combination sounds damn good and works.

I have a 2006 with factory JBL Nav and I installed the VAIS that works great. All controls work, including steering wheel, as it treats the iPod like a CD. It also works with iPhone.
