When Should You Change It?

All oils, no matter what their type, lose their viscosity or their protective role over time. When this happens, fresh oil is the solution, but how often is it necessary?

How often should you change your oil?
The more often you change it, the longer the engine will last. Engine oils are designed to meet car manufacturer requirements, and therefore need to be changed according to manufacturer recommendations.

Theoretically, the optimum time for changing oil should relate to a number of factors, and often the least important is how far your vehicle has travelled. Unfortunately, advised oil drain intervals are only averages, based on a typical type of driving. If driving conditions are more severe, a "classic" oil should be changed more frequently in order to maintain the maximum protection and cleanliness of the engine.

Castrol's products exceed the manufacturers specifications and guaranty outstanding protection of the engine in all type of driving and conditions.

Other factors to consider are:
-Number of cold starts
-Ambient temperature
-Effectiveness of crank case scavenging
-Wear of the engine
-Accuracy of carburation during warm-up period
-Quality of fuel
-Type of driving

Tips
-use your dipstick regularly
-don't run below the 'min' mark on your oil gage
-don't worry about the engine oil turning black
-always follow the manufacturer's recommendation in your hand book

How To Dispose Of Your Oil

Castrol is committed to the safe disposal of waste oil. If you have your car serviced at a dealership which uses Castrol oil, you can be assured that arrangements have been made to dispose of the used oil in a safe and responsible way.

If you change your own oil, please use the following advice - for your own safety, and that of the environment.

Avoid skin contact
-wear protective gloves
-wash skin quickly with a degreaser if any spillage occurs
-don't wash with petrol or gasoline, as when exposed to the skin it can pass straight through to your blood stream

Use a secure container
-Once you have drained the oil from your car's engine, use a funnel to transfer the used oil to a disposing container.
-Drain the oil into a container that will not leak - sealing it with a secure cap.
-Do not mix other substances with the used oil, like antifreeze or transmission fluid.
-Avoid plastic bottles which previously contained bleach, cleaners or other automobile fluids, they can contain residues that contaminate the oil. Avoid paint cans or containers used for gasoline.
-Store it away from children and sources of ignition

What do you do with your used oil?
Down a drain? In the bin?
Millions of gallons of oil are washed away every year through domestic misconduct.

You should never throw used oil down the drain or in the dustbin, as it gets into the waterways and contaminates the ground water supplies. Many countries offer special disposal sites and recycling facilities to counter this problem.

Find a local disposal unit
-Check with your local government or recycling coordinator for disposal procedures in your area.
-If you don't have an oil bank in your area, enquire at your local garage. They may have disposal barrels where you can deposit your used oil.

Found out that my dealer uses Castrol oil which is the same oil that Toyota uses in our 4runners from the factory. They have a deal from Castrol that if you change your oil and filter and use Castrol dino oil every 4000 miles Castrol will warrant your engine against any oil related failure for 300K miles, if you use their synthetic oil they will cover you for 600K miles. I think I will go for the 4K and 300K coverage. Plan on trading at 90K miles plus I personally feel that if you use a premium quality oil and change it using the OEM filter every 3-5K miles depending on the use of the vehicle you should never have a oil related problem. JMHO

So new 4runners have Castrol from the factory?

If you follow the bobistheoilguy website, the Castrol Syntec made in Germany is a group V PAO. I've yet to see it, but people seem to find it here and there and swear by it. OTherwise, Mobil 1 0w40 is ACEA-3 approved for Euro cars while normal M1 isn't. I've used M1 10w30, M1 Delvac 5w40 and find I like the D1 much more (it costs more, though).

What you do gain by going to a synthetic is better oil flow when it's cold, less suceptibility to shearing (due to heat, rpm's, engine design [some engines are harder on oil than others]) by the molecular nature of the oil, and a higher TBN (total base number, a number gauging the amount of additive in the oil). If you drive lots of short trips, this is going to reduce the life span of any oil (but if you have an initial TBN of 10 like in D1 vs. 6 like in M1 or lower like in a cheapo dino, you can drive longer theoretically). Also, I think it's the amount of silicon in the dirty oil (ie, sand from dirt in the air) that really wears your engine. The other metals merely indicate what's wearing and how much (bearings, etc.). There are lots of UOA's on the bobistheoilguy site and explanations on how to read them. My take on it is, what determines how long to run the oil is the amount of additive remaining (by the time it's down to below 2, it's shot), the amount of silicon, and the other residual metals, which should be low unless something is wrong. Also, the UOA will tell you if any coolant is leaking into the oil, etc. Other than this (getting UOA's done, say, every 3K mi), there really isn't any scientific way to know how long you should run your oil in your particular engine. I'm sure Toyota has done the same thing w/ dino oil.

This article is being discussed in the bobistheoilguy
forum. Written by a Texaco oil engineer.

So....the net of this long article are:

1. Change oil (and oil filter) frequently, especially if your
car runs at low speeds or idles much.
2. It does not really matter what kind of conventional oils
you use; they are more or less the same.
3. Use synthetic oils is better (except for the first 12,000 miles
or so).

The oil itself never degrades over time; it's the degradation of
the additives, unburned gas leaking into the oil, and particulate
matters that kill the oil. So doing (1) or (3) would protect
your engine.

just thought i would add my 2 cents in this... the only oil i noticed a difference in was valvoline maxlife. i put syn in my old car(not my 4runner) i put regular in but only valvoline maxlife made it run smoother.....

ive used valvoline maxlife in both my 4runner and my old ranger. it runs so much smoother with it. last time i changed my oil at 4300 miles, it was still fairly clean. it looked like it did at about 2000 in my ranger.

anyway, about synthetic, i have heard that vehicles made specifically for syn. are the only ones you should run it in. something about synthetic oils not having the real minerals to condition seals and gaskets, so they start leaking prematurely. personally, if my vehicle came with mineral oil, ill stick with it. i figure toyota has a reason behind everything they do, including oil type and viscosity

I think that only applies to the first 10-12000 miles. After this, you can use synthetics safely.
