Factory Radio Reception - Crappy! 3rd gen

Is it normal to get 30 miles or less from a station and have really bad reception on FM? Also, AM practically doesnt work at all, even in town. Is this normal or has something come unplugged or ?

I recently bought my 98 4runner limited and the power antenna grommet and nut was missing, i put a new grommet and nut on and started using the radio. THe reception of FM is ok in town, bad when you get a few miles from town and the AM is horrible all the time. Is something else wrong or is this normal?

Not sure about others but my FM reception always sucked too. It was worse when my after market H/U went in ( probably because that small antenna lead wasn't used anymore) . I finally said fudge it and hooked up to Sirius It's worth every penny man , especially if you go camping or travel a lot .

Take your radio out....there should be 2 antenna hookups plugged in....one is for the antenna on your hood...the other is for the antenna that is on your passenger side on the rear of your 4Runner...if that one is not plugged in then your reception will be horrible. But they both need to be plugged in.

Thanks for the tip, i noticed the passenger side antenna in the passenger side rear window? To pull the radio, just pop off the facia and pop the unit out of the dbl din mount?

Yep, that is the antenna.

To get the radio out you will have to pull the bezel off of that middle panel with the radio, A/C, etc....if you search for Radio Install in a 3rd Gen or something you will find an easy way to do it.

Make sure you plug all of the stuff back in when you put it back on!! Hopefully that is what your problem is...if not, then maybe your reception does suck.

I have a 2000 SR5 with the stock radio and have to say I'm quite impressed with reception I get. I live in Orlando and listen to a radio station in Tampa regularly. That's about 85 miles away and it comes in perfect.
