factory radio

my new 06 sr5 base factory radio seems really "bass ie", even turned down its like a 6 on regular radios-anyone else have/had this problem?

Yes, I was astonished how much bass the stock 06 T4R have. Coming from a 350Z, which had upgraded Bose speakers, the T4R sounded alot more bass. Eh, depending on your music taste, it may/may not be a problem. I listen to alittle hip/hop rap, so I luv it. I suppose you can swap out the speakers for something with an inline x-over, you can then filter out the lower frequencies.

I thought it strange too. When I first turned the radio on - I thought someone was messing with it at the dealer and had maxed it out. Nope was set at 0.

I usually listen at -3 or -2, and even then it can be too much.

It doesn't help that the HU has no midrange control either.

Otherwise, it sounds perfectly fine. Has anyone compared the base radio with the JBL ? Is it really that much different (better ?)

Huh, glad I'm not the only one wondering about the bass. It's worse IMO when listening to the radio, espcially news radio (heavy bass with voices is no good). CDs tend to sound less bass-heavy.

Overall I think the tonal balance of the Toyota base unit sucks. Can anyone tell me if the Scion HU (2005 or 2006) is any better?

Generally the Scion HU is highly regarded as an easy plug and play upgrade over the stock stereo. I have one on the way myself. Do a search, there's a ton of information here about it....

I have the JBL system and it too has more bass then highs. You can even mess with the midrange but it just doesn't seem to help much. Very dissappointed in it. It sounds a lot better while playing cds or with an IPOD, but regular radio is not that great. Plus with the IPOD you can set the adjustments to make up where the head unit lacks behind.

I have the same situation. Mine had the upgraded premium 6 disk in dash mp3 ect...( option code DJ )the one that has the AM/SAT button on it and it also pushes alot of bass.

I too keep my bass around 0 or 1 .

What do you keep your treble at ?

I keep my bass at zero also, I keep my treble on the higher end simply because I prefer a more clear sound, not so muffled.

I'd read plenty about the Scion HU features but not much about the sound quality vs. the factory system. Guess I should finally go out and find one and stop wondering why a $14K Scion has a better standard stereo than a $35K 4Runner.

I've been wondering the same thing, especially since when I got my '06 sport a few weeks ago I wasn't even able to upgrade to the JBL if I wanted to because of the regional packaging Toyota uses. Don't get me wrong, I love my 'runner and it's no big deal to me to pay a few hundred dollars to upgrade the hu and maybe the speakers when I would have spent the same or more in purchasing the JBL when I bought the truck.....it just seems silly that Toyota doesn't make this popular option available more widely and make a few extra bucks in profit at the same time.
