I've done a couple thousand miles of Forest Service Roads but this was my first real trail run. Few of the locals in jeeps and a tracker could not believe that I even made it over the first obstacle.

I've officially caught the bug....
 
If you need another pair I have a set laying around in the garage. You can have them. I put on some AllPro Sliders and they are just collecting dust now. They are the correct color also.

Slider are on the list and should be ordered shortly. Sadly they are a little down the list and holding me back from taking any serious trails.
I didn't mind destroying the running boards (actually thought they were going to be worse) but I refuse to damage my rocker panels, especially when the sliders will be on soon enough.

gnarly pics ... you are supposed to remove the running boards so this doesn't happen ...

leaving the running boards installed can actually cause a lot of damage that would have been avoided by removing them, even before you can install sliders.

I was thinking the same thing.. These things were way ahead of their time back in the day. The fact that they out perform a lot of new vehicles and still blend in well amazes me.

Yep, I had the same thing with a jeep guy. I also pulled him out further down the trail, with my windows up and A/C on.

I take that a different way. I think these trucks are the last remnants of a bygone era when 4x4's were actually built like 4x4s.

Most trucks from the 80's and earlier = solid axles front and rear, plain old transfer cases with manual locking hubs, simple but effective leaf spring suspension.

Most trucks from the modern day = independent suspension all around, uni-body construction, electronic AWD instead of real 4wd. IMO, there are only a handful of modern vehicles built with even mild off-road use in mind.

I'd rather tackle a trail in a stock 1st gen 4runner than a 5th gen, I'll put it that way :o

I was speaking in terms of blending in with current generations of different brand vehicles. The 3rd gen I believe still fits in well with a lot of cars out on the road. A second gen is slowly getting out of that range and a 1st gen is easily detectable. Look at it this way: If you took a few random people who didn't know a thing about Toyotas and drove a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen 4runner mixed in with a bunch of other newer and later 2000's vehicles and told them to speak up when they saw a vehicle that didn't fit in which one do you think they'd pick? I do agree that these 3rd gens are definitely the last of their kind of the line-up of 4Runners but even today they blend in well. I wonder when the automotive companies will figure out that a lot of people don't enjoy a ton of gizmos and huge gaudy vehicles.

Problem is, lots of people do enjoy the big, golf-course SUV's and it's where they make their money. As many people as there are here and in similar forums, it's still a fraction of a percent of the auto industry!

Sadly this is very true. I think true gear heads are slowly a dieing breed.
People think they want all the new gizmos and gadgets because car manufacturers tell them that they want all that crap. Look at current commercials, "father of the year" comes home with his new car and brags about all the bells and whistles it came with to his neighbor/friends. Average person eats this up and ends up never using most of the features.
I've had a few customers now that told me they payed extra to buy the car with a pearl trycoat (type of paint color) and then they complain when I have to charge them more to match and paint this retarded color.


Honestly speaking my 3rd gen is on the border line for having too much electronics. When I first got it the digital climate control pissed me off on a weekly basis... I've excepted and learned to live with it.

All the "stuff" on modern vehicles is one of the big reasons why the rated MPG's haven't really improved. Any added efficiency is used up by all the parasitic loads; vehicles are more dense. That being said, there is more efficiency as a result of some of the added technology... but I agree that there's a lot of doodads and gizmos on modern vehicles, just don't take away my retracting rear window!
