Factory suspension from '07 on a 1996???

Question:

After I did the lift on my 2007 I was left with the old factory suspension (which is essentially brand new). We have been thinking about replacing the suspension on our 1996 4runner (it does have 200k.)

So I was thinking heck I have this factory suspension just sitting in the garage....I wonder if it would bolt right up to the 1996 runner? I know the spring rates and such may be different but overall it would save a lot of cash not having to purchase another new suspension (considering that this one isn't going to be lifted.)

Anyone have any experience with this or something similar and can lend advice...what works/what doesn't? ...anything special that might need to be done or is it as simple as one might imagine?

You are probably better off selling your brand new suspension for your 07 on ebay and then with the proceeds you buy the exact suspension parts you need for your 96

It can be done but I would not advise of it.

The 07 suspension will bolt on (pending using your 96 top plate for the front suspension). Though the 07 suspension will automatically give you an appox 2-3" lift due to the design of the lower shock. Look and compare for yourself to get a better perspective.

Thanks for the info....I didn't realize we might end up with a lift kit after all If I had my choice I would love to lift it and remove the running boards...but alas the 96 isn't actually "mine." I will have climb underneath to take a closer look and look at what you are describing. This sounds more promising than I was expecting though. The only issue I can foresee is the leveling of the vehicle (and maybe extending the brake lines)... but being a 96 those parts are easy to find and cheap. Thanks!!!

[If we attempt this (probably at the end of summer though) I'll record and take photos of the process and maybe it might come in handy for others with two 4runners that have a 4th gen suspension lying around.]

I hope your 96 is a 2wd truck because if it's 4wd it'll be too much for the front. The cv angles will be too severe. Will require a diff drop and then some.
