I used plasti dip just in case it turned out bad I could peel it off. It actually turned out really good.
Mother's and McGuire's both make specific products for this, called "Always Black" and "Forever Black" or something like that as another member mentioned.
Both work well, I used them on my E36 trim, but be careful about getting them on paint.
Plasti dip is an OK short term solution, but over time it'll chip and scuff, and it's only easy to remove if you do so relatively shortly after applying. We had a hell of a time removing it from my buddys infiniti after it had sun baked for a year or so.

Heat gun works great if you take your time and work slowly across it. It's the most effective, best looking, and most durable solution.
haven't heard of this before, could you expatiate a bit? is it as simple as uniformly heating the cladding?

Yes, exactly that. Look it up on YouTube. You'll find plenty of videos from Chevy Avalanches and those vehicles with enormous amounts of plastic. Watch a few videos and try it out on your own. You'll figure out the right heat and technique for what you're working on pretty quick.

The heat re-melts the outer layer of the plastic, bringing the internal oils, etc. back to the surface. it can be done multiple times before the plastic doesn't respond well to it.
Don't overheat it and lose the texture!

Over the years, I have fought this same battle....especially with the rear bumper cover. I have tried everything and on the recommendation of a friend, I tried "WIPE NEW". (Yes, the same stuff you see on TV)
The only reason I tried it is because a good friend showed me where he applied it to the front bumper of his '92 Chevy. I was amazed and he swore by it.
I have to admit, I am also favorably impressed. The stuff is not greasy, does not rub off but SMELLS to high heaven when you apply it. I have been real pleased with it. Bought it at the local WalMart for about $14.00.
NOTE: It says it was a triple prize winner at SEMA so that gave me a bit more confidence.

I am as well....just tried the stuff on my 2003 this past weekend and it looks great! I've tried Mothers Back to Black, as well as the heat gun method...'Wipe New' yielded the best results by far (IMO). I can get some before/after pictures up if requested.
