Fair offering price on this 3rd gen??

Hey Guys I am looking at trading in the wifes car and getting another runner. Been on the search for a while and looking for something with low miles (4 a 3rd gen) and came across this. For some reason you just don't find many that are 4wd vehicles in this area. So finding one that is not completely warn out is sometimes tough to do. I know the pricing is high, but what do you guys feel would be a solid offer? We are going to take a look at it tonight. :thanks:

ouch. seems a bit high if you ask me. pay cash and offer what you think it is worth. that is how I got mine. maybe if it was a Sport but it is not. good luck and let us know how it goes.

The problem with the market in the DFW area is there are a lot of 4x2's and dealerships want a premium for 4x4. The average mark up is 1800 on a 4x4 so maybe a offer of 10K. Depends on the offer for the wife's current car and if you own it outright, etc. You are definitely right about it being tough to find one that is not worn out. The good thing about the Plano area is most were driven by Soccer mom's and well taken care of. Good luck.

That price is their starting point. I bet there is a bit of room in that price. Go in there and insult them with a low number, and let the dance begin!

Around $9000 sounds attractive to me.

I assume it hasn't had the timing belt and water pump done, so you could use that as leverage.

If there is a premium for 4wd in your area I would be happy with anything under 10,500. That 4runner looks mint. Definitely start somewhere in the low 9's though.

Pricey but nice truck. I sold my 99 Sport with 193K on it for $7500 in June. (I got top dollar for it but it was perfect). I think $10K ish is fair.

If they do such a premium in your area, why not shop outside the area?

We do own our honda outright, but will probably sell ourselves just because it is in great shape and a dealer isnt going to give us squat for it. I do find it weird how few 4wd vehicles are in this area.....

9's sound like the right place to start. I figure since they are a premium here we could negoitiate from that point. 11k is out of the question.

On a side note, can any of you 01/02 drivers give me any tips on items to look for, rust is self explainitory, but things that are specific to those years & 4wd models? Any extras that come with the 4wd, such as rear diff lock (that is a push button right?) ect.....

There's no rear diff lock on the 01-02's. It was replaced with a traction control system and a center locking diff (letting you have an AWD option).

I don't know what the market is like down there, but up here in the DC metro area, the dealers aren't budging much on price and anything under 10k goes pretty quick. I would say offer them 9500. I just got my 2002 sport for 9800 with a little more miles but it was very clean.

Up here in the PNW they would get asking price. I use to sell cars, when something that clean and sought after in that condition comes a long, you don't move on price. I'd tell them to go find another one. Anyone who has looked for that clean of a 3rd Gen knows how hard it is to find, if they were that common there wouldn't be a mark up on them.


There's people on here who have sold their's for $10K+ with way more miles. Sure they had alot of mods but then everyone says "you never get your money back for the mods you've done" so apparently that isn't true.

Either way I think its pretty fairly priced and anywhere in the mid 10's would be a good deal to me.

Ad says it has 95K miles. KBB isn't that correct, our rigs are way under valued on there.


NADA clean trade in with 96K miles in my zipcode is $10,125

Based on the window sticker, they've already come down about $800. I (personally) don't think you'll be able to get it for much less than $10K. It does appear to be in great shape though.

The things that really matter here are your time frame (ido you need to buy now) how long they've had it on their lot and how much they've got in it. I was able to get mine for a steal because it sat on the dealer's lot for 4 months before I came along and bought it.

I would offer $9,500 and walk if they went above 10K
