What should I be looking to pay for an 1988, 4-cylinder, manual trans, wagon model, 4runner with some problems?
The good: good body, only very minimal rust on one fender, all service records since 1993, and 108,xxx miles, brand new brakes, and almost new tires.
The bad: It needs the timing chain done and according to the vehicles mechanic (fortunately my mechanic also) have recommended an engine rebuild (thus the motivation for the sale). It is burning oil. I am pretty mechanical inclined, but I have never done a rebuild, so at the very least it will be frustrating and take me awhile. Its got minor leaks elsewhere, like the rear diff. And the clear coat is gone on the hood and roof, so it looks a little rough.
The only reason I ask here, is because I cannot find any reliable values for vehicles older than 1990, damn you kbb.com. I also have never bought a vehicle this old, so it is throwing me off a bit on what I should expect to pay.
I am seeing values all the way from 550 to 1900 on various sites, for a 'fair' value vehicle. I plan on doing the timing chain and rebuild myself, we will see how that all pans out. I want to at least get a good enough price that I can recoup the cost of timing chain parts and a rebuild kit.
BTW: the seller has no mechanical knowledge what-so ever and is trying to get what her boyfriend said she could sell it for which is $1500, but hasn't had a lot of interest in it.
