Falls Flat on her face..

Ok soo I love my runner but recently i have been noticing something rather odd..
I cant pin point it. How ever i still have my p0171 lean code.
BUt this is what happens...Flat ground just crusing basically anything under half throttle..the truck runs fine...If i lay into it it falls flat on its face..like its starving for air...or gas, or like the timing is off.
Im not sure but it could be trans also Over drive/3rd gear seem to be fickle...
i cant really explain how it does it.
Now im not a re**** i can wrench on my stuff..but this is just boggling my mind...
Would the Code be causing this behaivor...
if soo i have put in a new MAF....

sounds like inadequate fuel supply

a clogged filter, injector(s), or a weak pump?

fits with the lean code...

could be maf too

Id say do the cheap stuff if it hasn't been done.... clean maf, replace fuel filter, run injector cleaner

I would do the fuel filter, plug wires and plugs before touching the MAF. Only use Toyota parts, not knock offs. These MAFs are broken easily when messed with but generally very reliable. I have 211k miles on my original MAF. I plan to clean it soon but only as a singular event, not part of troubleshooting.

Thats exactly what it feels like...no matter the gear...it just falls flat..like its starving for something...gas...air.. spark...i cant figure it out...under half throttle it its ok..maybe even 1/4 thottle it is ok...
I put new OEM plugs in...and wires...when i got it...

Replaced the Fuel filter..it was a fram...i replaced with wix or what ever that one is...
It seems to be alot better...ill know tommorow on my way to work. I also deleted the code, to see if it will come back.
It does run alot better, but i still think it needs a little bit more of a tune up. im going to seafoam it tommorow...

As in fuel system. Filter or pump that is.

Yeah that is what i figured...
Im not new to working on cars...i just like peoples input...start with the basics....my first inclination was my trans or something...i was all worried...then i thought head gasket haha...
I work in IT all day long so i think big when it comes to faulty systems....then when im doing fab work in the shop...its a whole different mind set...so sometimes its hard for me to get back in the simple trouble shoot mood of this type of crap...

BTW to change the fuel filter...i didnt have one of those spyder wrenches they suggest to use so i made one by cutting a notch small enough for the fuel line to go through...in a 14mm box end...it worked great!

But when you said fuel I have started with Fuel Line. I need to look into fuel pump as well.

Im also considering doing the Ford f-150 tank swap -upgrade at this point if i have to change the fuel pump...I hate doing things more then ones... and why drop the tank twice if i dont have to.

Finding time to wokr on this has been ruff. I have an exo cage on a 86 t4r, an engine cage / long travel setup on a 92 toyota pickup...and a complete rebuild of a 94 ranger front end...
so i have been busy..but i think if i can find a tank im gonna do the tank swap.

Seafoam has multiple uses so I don't know what you are planning - but make sure you put some in the gas tank to clean the injectors/fuel system, or use some other injector cleaner.

I work in IT as well

I've had the F-150 tank swap on my mind too, and I actually have an '88 F-150 with aux tank that I could take it from :thumb3:. I just need to get a rear bumper tire carrier first and thats $$$

I hope you didn't take me wrong. I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I was just clarifying that I wasn't just talking Bad Gas.

A little late but it sounded exactly like a partially clogged fuel filter to me. Hopefully that takes care of the last of the symptoms.

I've been trying to figure out the best option for this as well. Contacted TransferFlow about a 4Runner version of this product. Sadly, they have no plans to build something for our rigs.

Reno - you've got some serious resources at your disposal...how about you fab one of these up and then start selling them. :artist2:
Put me down as #1 on the wait list. :hello:

I was going to do a thottle body clean or a seam foam cleaning and then possibly a bit in the tank...

I have a fab shop..so rear bumper tire carrier is a no brainer...but i do need to find me a tank..

And yes, i replaced with a wix last night and it seems to be a lot better...still has some hesitation. The CEL hasnt came back yet so thats good. I may be doing the f-150 setup and i could consider building install kits for people if they want em.... I could also do custom aluminum tanks..of any sort. so who knows...right now im not trying to make Darla a project...more just a fun DD...and ocaisnally do some stuff on it..

Since the filter helped, I would reset the computer. It may have learned to run the best it could with the clogged filter. It may need to relearn how to run properly.

I did reset or clear the codes with my scanner thingy...to reset? disconnect battery for a bit?
