fan low speed not working.....help!!!

the low speed on my fan is not working.

off and the rest of the speeds work fine.

is it possible that i have a switch problem, or do i probably have a fan problem?

it is the same throughout HVAC whether on A/C air conditioning or heater.

What year is your SUV?
 
I had this happen on my 94 a while back. Only in my case the low and high only worked, the two settings in between didn't. So, my fan was either full low or full high.. Then the high setting stopped working and only worked on full low. On mine I figured it could have been two things.

1. A bad resistor
2. A bad Switch.

I yanked the resistor and buzzed it out using my Ohm meter and it still looked rock solid.

Next I yanked out the fan switch and low and behold it was damaged on the back end where the wires connect. Some how it shorted and actually melted part of the switch body. I could see black carbon on the rear side. Not to mention it was a little bit of a pain to get the switch out of the dash to inspect.

Long story short, I went to Toyota, bought a brand new switch, installed it and everything was back to normal again.

i just picked up a new resistor...so i'll try that first.
if that doesn't work, i'll dig into the dashboard to look at the switch.

Those resistors are pretty rock solid. I would be surprised if your resistor is bad. But then again if it is bad then its an easy fix.

Your resistor should give you about 3 or 4 resistance readings and one with zero resistance (Which is for your High Setting) between the hot connector lead and the other leads.

The resistor will get warm on the lower settings and stay cool on the high setting. Sounds backwards but that is how a buddy of mine who is an electrical engineer explained it to me and it made a lot of sense. Basically the fan wants to run on high naturally and the various resistance values on your resistor just slows the fan down creating the lower settings.

If I'm totally wrong, someone please correct me..
